21 Best Eyelash Growth Serums That Work
Whether you’re looking to give your lashes a small boost or to significantly boost their growth, we’ve got you covered with the best eyelash growth serums available online!
1. Best Overall: Grande Cosmetics GrandeLASH – MD Lash Enhancing Serum
This lash serum is pretty iconic, with a very hydrating formula that also includes a serious active ingredient. That ingredient of note is Cloprostenol Isopropyl Ester, a prostaglandin analog that is likely the reason why this formula acts as one of the best lash growth serums. The other ingredients, like glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid, are also helpful in nourishing the lash line. Buy it at Sephora!
2. Best Strengthening: RevitaLash ADVANCED Eyelash Conditioner
This is the second non-prescription product that’s often regarded as the best eyelash growth serum on the market. It’s made with ethylcloprostenolamide, another prostaglandin analog that has shown an ability to improve lash growth. The formula is light and hydrating and also features biotin, which is a fortifying protein. Get it at Nordstrom!
3. Best Against Breakage: Rapid Lash Eyelash Enhancing Serum
Rapid Lash is another great eyelash growth serum to try. It’s made with isopropyl cloprostenate, which is similar to the active ingredients in MD Lash and RevitaLash. This ingredient is boosted by the presence of a few hair-growth promoting peptides, as well as a variety of skin- and lash-nourishing plant oils and extracts. Order it from Dermstore!
4. Best Soothing: neuLASH Lash Enhancing Serum
This lash enhancing serum is quite similar to Rapid Lash, with the same potent actives and peptides, although in slightly different concentrations. It’s a soothing, hydrating formula that actively conditions the skin and lashes while also promoting serious growth. The main difference is that this formula is perhaps a hint thicker. Find it at Nordstrom!
5. Best Lightweight: Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Platinum Long Lash Serum
If you don’t want to mess with synthetic prostaglandins, this is one of the best lash growth serum alternatives we’ve seen. The unique formula relies on a clover flower extract and peptide blend that has been shown in studies to help with hair growth. This product is not quite as intense as the first three we showcased, but it still gives results after a few months. It’s available at Sephora.
6. Best Against Lash Loss: SmartFX The Original SmartLash Eyelash Enhancer
This formula is rich in peptides and amino acids meant to help the lash follicle improve its ability to grow lashes. It’s not intense, but it’s also more affordable than other options, so if you’re looking for something mild and natural, it’s a great choice. It contains ingredients that can soothe the skin and counter stress-related eyelash loss. Shop for it online on Dermstore!
7. Best Conditioning: Lancer Skincare Lash Serum Intense
This is the final intense lash growth serum we’re going to recommend. It’s pricey but effective, with isopropyl cloprostenate effectively stimulating lash growth. It also features copper peptides that also have growth-boosting effects, so if you’re desperate for results, then it’s definitely worth the price. You can pick it up from Sephora.
8. Best Vegan: LashFOOD Phyto‐Medic Eyelash Enhancer
This all-natural lash serum is another lovely alternative to more intense prostaglandin formulas. It’s made with Ecocert-certified ingredients that help to naturally improve the condition of the lash follicle. It features active ingredients like arginine, ginseng, and a lot of antioxidant-rich extracts that protect from lash loss. It can definitely help the look of the lashes, but it’s not dramatic. Purchase it from Dermstore!
9. Best J-Beauty: Shiseido Full Lash Serum
The Japanese brand Shiseido always delivers amazing products. This eyelash serum includes arginine, which is able to protect hairs from oxidative damage. Arginine is also said to promote hair growth, although we haven’t seen strong evidence of that. Besides that, this formula is simple, light, and hydrating, and it does a great job of moisturizing the lashes. Grab it from Nordstrom!
10. Best Anti-Aging: Vichy LiftActiv Eyes and Lashes Serum
This cool eye and lash serum from Vichy is made to fortify and hydrate. As a lash serum, it’s not intended to improve lash growth but to strengthen the lashes in a way that prevents breakage. It’s wonderfully anti-aging for the skin, with a variety of peptides and humectants. It’s sold through Amazon.
11. Best Applicator: Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For Turbo Conditioning Lash Enhancer
This formula is one of the most potent prostaglandin-free options, with an intense 11% peptide complex as well as a ton of conditioning compounds. One of the coolest things about this eyelash serum, however, is the applicator, which features a mascara-style wand as well as a small brush, so you can apply it easily to both the lashes and the lash line. Purchase it from Sephora!
12. Best Two-in-One: Jane Iredale PureLash Lash Extender & Conditioner
This awesome two-in-one product is both a lash serum and a primer for mascara. When you apply it, it creates a layer around your lashes that thickens and lengthens them, making your lashes significantly longer once you apply mascara. It also helps to nourish and protect the lashes with beeswax, panthenol, and wheat proteins, so you can even use it overnight. Buy it from Nordstrom!
13. Best Budget: Rimmel Lash Accelerator Serum
This extremely budget-friendly eyelash serum is made for both brows and lashes. It’s a quick-drying gel that sits somewhere between makeup and lash/skincare since it can also act as a lash or brow fixative. It includes a fairly large amount of peptides that work over the course of a few months to slightly improve growth. Order it online from Amazon!
14. Best Drugstore: No7 Lash Impact Lash Serum
Despite being affordable, this lash serum is quite impressive. Though it’s advertised as a serum, it’s actually more of a light cream, although it sinks into the lash line beautifully. It’s made with a collection of peptides that might help stimulate the hair follicles, which is why No7 claims that this serum can improve lash growth, although we wouldn’t expect radical effects. It also features hydrating ingredients that can actively nourish the lashes. It’s available at Ulta.
15. Best for Lashes & Brows: Milk Makeup KUSH Growhouse Lash + Brow Serum
Despite being free from any hormone-like ingredients, this lash and brow serum still seems to be quite effective. It takes a while to work, but thanks to the combo of hemp seed extract, peptides, and plant proteins, it gives the lashes an amazing boost. Over time, most users notice a real increase in lash growth. Shop for it at Sephora!
16. Best Multi-Tasking: Perricone MD No Makeup Lash Treatment & Mascara
Why not choose a multi-tasker? This mascara darkens, lengthens and separates the lashes while nourishing them so they can grow better. The formula includes biotin and avocado oils, which makes for a very gentle and fortifying mix. You can use it in conjunction with a more active lash serum for double the effect. Find it at Nordstrom!
17. Best Gentle Formula: L’Oréal Lash Serum Solution
This soothing lash serum was designed to combat lash loss due to irritation. It’s a mild, soothing formula that includes centella asiatica, arginine, and plenty of water-binders. It soothes the skin of the lash line while also loading up the lashes with antioxidants and moisture. It’s perfect if you want something mild and gentle. Pick it up at Amazon!
18. Best Active-Based: Indeed Labs Peptalash II Eyelash Serum
Indeed Labs always impresses us with their unique, active-based formulas. This eyelash growth serum relies on a blend of peptides to boost lash growth, and it works quickly even if the results are subtler than with hormone-like ingredients. The pen itself sometimes malfunctions, which is the only real drawback to this product since the formula itself is so good. Get it from Ulta!
19. Best Luxury: Elizabeth Arden Prevage Clinical Lash Plus Brow Enhancing Serum
This is a very soothing eyelash serum with peptides to boost lash growth. It includes an antioxidant-rich extract from green tea and calming chamomile. The brand did a study where all users noticed an improvement in their lashes, although we gotta admit that’s a pretty vague statement. You can grab it from Amazon.
20. Best with Protein: DHC Eyelash Tonic
This simple eyelash serum includes one truly unusual ingredient: placental protein! It’s not clear which animal it comes from, but what is clear is that, as a protein, it is able to penetrate and strengthen the lashes. The formula also includes soothing agents that are great for the skin, like comfrey and aloe. It’s sold through Dermstore.
21. Best K-Beauty: Etude House My Lash Serum
We’re finishing things off with the super budget-friendly eyelash serum from the Korean brand Etude House. It has a simple, hydrating, and fortifying formula that puts your lashes in an optimal condition. The formula includes fortifying biotin, soothing ginseng, as well as moisture-binding ingredients to quench both the lashes and lash line. Buy it on Amazon!
What Is an Eyelash Serum?
Just as we’d use a serum to nourish our skin or hair with light, quick-penetrating ingredients, we can also use a lash serum to nourish the lashes. Eyelash serums are meant to moisturize and strengthen the lashes and their follicles, and many formulas also include ingredients that are meant to improve lash growth.
When it comes specifically to lash growth serums, the most effective ones include special ingredients that impact the lash growth cycle and stimulate the follicles. These ingredients are prostaglandin analogs, and they are lipids with hormone-like effects. Since the hair cycle (including the lash cycle) is influenced by hormones, it follows that only hormone-like ingredients can alter it.
Do Eyelash Growth Serums Work?
Well, sort of. There is only one lash growth ingredient that is absolutely proven to increase eyelash growth, and it’s called bimatoprost. However, because it’s so intense, it’s only available in prescription drugs like Latisse. You would have to speak to your doctor about getting a prescription for it.
As for other eyelash serums, it really depends on what kind of results you expect. Anything that includes a prostaglandin analog will likely give longer, thicker lashes after a few weeks or months of use.
Lash serums made with peptides and natural extracts are not guaranteed to give results. Some users notice an increase in lash growth, but not all of them, and the research that exists isn’t conclusive. Some peptides have shown the ability to improve hair growth in limited studies, but these studies haven’t been done on the lashes.
Those prostaglandin-free serums are more likely to give overall healthier lashes, even if they won’t necessarily stimulate lash growth. They can condition the lashes and the skin, which helps fortify the lashes and prevent breakage, which is a different way of enhancing them and improving their condition.
Are Eyelash Serums Safe?
Using anything so close to your eyes comes with an inherent risk, but in general, eyelash serums are relatively safe. If the eyelash serum gets in your eyes, you might experience some momentary stinging, but that will go away once the serum is clear from your eyes.
The serums that contain prostaglandin analogs do come with a few more risks than less active formulas. The most common side effects, like mild irritation, stinging, and swelling, are still quite rare and can be easily remedied by rinsing off the serum with cold water. Some users notice their skin along the lash line darkening a bit, but that’s even more unusual.
Since these lash serums are intended to have hormone-like effects, it’s also important to avoid using them if you’re pregnant or nursing.
With prescription lash growth serums that contain bimatoprost, one side effect that has been reported is the eye color darkening, but we haven’t found any cases of this happening with a non-prescription eyelash serum.
Tips on Choosing the Best Eyelash Growth Serum
If we haven’t hammered it home yet, here it is: what you must know to choose the right eyelash growth serum for you!
• If you want guaranteed eyelash growth, choose an eyelash serum that contains prostaglandin analogs, like the top 3 options on our list.
• If you really don’t mess around, speak to your doctor about a prescription for a lash serum with bimatoprost.
• If you prefer all-natural formulas or are nervous about using prostaglandins, choose a gentler lash serum with peptides and plant extracts instead. It won’t have intense results, but it’ll definitely improve the condition of your lashes.
How to Use an Eyelash Growth Serum?
The type of eyelash serum you choose to purchase will influence how you’ll apply it. When it comes to lash growth serums, you’re looking for them to influence your lash follicles rather than the lashes themselves, so you should apply them as you would a liquid eyeliner, with a simple, light strong along the upper lash line.
Do this when your eye area is totally clean, and wait a few minutes before applying any creams to the area in order to allow the serum to totally absorb into the skin. With most eyelash serums, using them once a day in the evening is best, although you can also opt to use them twice a day for faster results.
Some lash serums (usually ones without prostaglandin-analogs) are meant to reinforce both the lashes and the skin, in which case they usually come with spoolie applicators instead of brushes. In that case, apply them to your lashes just as you would a mascara.
When Will You See Results?
The types of results you will see depend on the eyelash serum you choose as well as the effects you expect. With a more active lash growth serum, you can expect to see a change in your lashes after 5-6 weeks. You will see maximum results after 5 months or so.
At that point, you can keep using your eyelash serum for maintenance, or you can stop for a few months and see what happens. Usually, the lashes go back to their normal cycle after about a month or so, so after that point, you may want to go back to using a lash growth serum.
How to Remove Lash Growth Serum?
In general, you’re not supposed to remove a lash growth serum. You simply apply a thin layer at night, let it soak in, and by morning there is nothing to remove. However, if you experience irritation from the serum or the formula is a little more fixative, you might want to actively take it off.
For most lash serum formulas, simply using cool water to rinse the eye will suffice, especially if you’re dealing with irritation. You can use a damp cotton pad, as well, although be careful not to rub too harshly since that can irritate your eyes.
If your lash serum is a fixative or a two-in-one primer or mascara, then you will need makeup remover to take it off. Simply soak a cotton pad with your favorite makeup remover and hold it over the eye for a few seconds to break down the product. Finally, wipe it off in downward motions.
