The spring/ summer 2018 swimwear trends from the Miami Swim Week represent the swimsuits equivalent of New York, London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks rolled into one. If you want to know what the hottest options will be in and near the water, this is the Fashion Week you want to attend most. The collections are about swimwear – they don’t include swimwear. It’s all about the bathing suits, and nothing else – where and when is it better to spot and call out the upcoming summer 2018 swimwear trends?
The summer 2018 swimwear trends cover every possible aspect and personality that could want to make a debut. Swimwear is a notoriously personal item capable of showing off much more than skin. Personality is always evident in a person’s choice of bathing suit.
Thankfully the options for the spring/ summer 2018 swimwear trends include one and two pieces with an expansion of imaginative styling. The rise of the one piece is in full force as well, and each of the designs is stunning with options to flatter everyone. From sunbathers to surfers and models to the more modest, the summer 2018 swimwear trends strategically cover it all.
#1. Front Tied Swimsuits
Front tied bikinis are typically string bikinis, but can also be a part of tankinis and monokinis as well. One of the best and most interesting examples of front tied bikinis is the strappy, laced tops on the Blue Life swimwear runway. They even had a ruffle top that laced and tied in the front, cleverly designed to not take away from the light ruffle, but still be seen.
Maaji showed a cool, printed bikini set that had a front-tie top as well. Luli Fama had a bright pink one piece with an interesting cut out and a front tie as well showing that this is not a ‘one way only’ type of summer 2018 swimsuit trend.
#2. One-Shoulder Swimsuits
One-shoulder swimsuits are hardly new as a concept, though as with everything that cyclically emerges as a trend, the concept is infused with a fresh new take. With Luli Fama, the one-shoulder two piece that hit the runway was lightly pink, nearly nude, with a single shouldered top that featured a short sleeve on one side and a tie on the other, technically making it a string bikini. It was cute, fun and different.
Lybethras showed a one-shoulder bikini with a few straps as an accent, and For Love & Lemons showed a cute printed one-shoulder top as well.
#3. Crocheted Swimwear
Beach Bunny showed cute swimwear for the new season that was on par with several summer 2018 swimwear trends. One of the most fun looks that covered more than one trend is a crocheted tankini style top that laced up the V-neck and even showed a fringe of tassels around the bottom.
#4. Swimsuits with Tassels
Tassels actually made their initial ‘big splash’ last year, but the concept has steadily grown and cemented itself into an unmistakable summer 2018 swimsuit trend. The type and size of the tassels varied runway to runway, but the presence was fun and increasingly creative.
Agua Bendita, Beach Bunny, Courtney Allegra, Silvia Ulson, Scandinavian, and Eli Madi all presented options for the spring/ summer 2018 swimwear trends, and though they were all beautiful, some were clearly more practical than others.
Elie Madi, for example, showed a breathtaking one piece with cleverly placed embellishments and exiguous, feathery multitiered tassels. Courtney Allegra, however, showed itsy-bitsy bikinis with cleverly placed tassels at the end of the ties that did not affect the practicality of the swimsuit for regular beach wear.
#5. Plunging-Neckline One Pieces
One pieces are cute, but when you want to add a touch of oomph to your suit, think plunging necklines, which are one of the best summer 2018 swimwear trends to go for!
For Love & Lemons showed a white belted, plunging neckline one piece. The neckline was framed in a loose ruffle, and the bottom of the high-cut bathing suit was also intricately textured. Luli Fama showed a sheer and bright one piece with a plunging neckline as well as a turquoise, high-cut, deep-neckline one piece.
There were others, and deep necklines have become a bit of a regularity. Liliana Montoya, Lila Nikole, Frankies Bikinis, Blue Life Swimwear, Mikoh, and Goosberry each showed at least one deeply plunging neckline on their interesting one-piece swimsuits.
#6. High-Cut Swimsuits
High-cut swimsuits are making a definitive comeback in nearly every cut. This cut was primarily at its height in the ‘90s, but is storming its way into the limelight as a summer 2018 swimwear trend.
Lolli Swim showed a few high-cut two pieces in light colors. In the two pieces, the high-cut bottoms tend to get a bit strappy, as they did on the Beach Bunny runway. Luli Fama showed off options that included high-cut one-piece swimsuits as well in several colors on their lively runway as did For Love & Lemons.
#7. Strappy Monokinis
Monokinis are one pieces that look like a bikini that is attached by a piece of fabric or latticework. This can be done on the front, crossed over or just on one or both sides. Gottex had several of these out and about on the runway. For Love & Lemons also showed a polka dot monokini that was strappy, risqué and fun, in an itsy-bitsy kinda way.
#8. Ultra Sexy One pieces
One pieces are not generally considered to be sexy, though options like T-Rivera and the Baywatch style swimsuits (which are revamped, of course) definitely break through. Most of the super sexy one pieces fall into at more than one of the above categories. The serious plunge of some of the necklines and cleverly placed cut outs on the one-piece swimsuit trends for summer 2018 are masterful.
Hammock took no prisoners with their one pieces, one of which featured a deeply plunging neckline and sides that were nothing but straps. Lila Nikole featured a halter necked, printed backless one piece with a deep plunge that also shows significant amounts of side boob.
Mister Triple X showed a silver metallic swimsuit with a plunging neck, backless design and cut outs to complete the look that touched on several 2018 swimsuit trends simultaneously. Gottex, Lolli Swim, Liliana Montoya, and Hot As Hell (which showed a gathered halter-neck one piece with ties at the hip of the high-cut bottom) also showed several ultra sexy one pieces.
#9. Activewear Swimsuits
Activewear swimsuits actually include a lot of options. Most of the options, like those from Body Glove swimwear and Seafolly, showed off sporty style bralettes and amazing surfer gear. Even the cold-shoulder top by Seafolly looks activewear chic. The zip-up options on the runway seemed to perfectly fit the requirements as well. Issa De Mar also showed a few options that fit the activewear trend as well.
#10. Shimmer and Shine
Anything reflective on a swimsuit can either be a great success or a glaring nightmare, but thanks to the clever fabrications and more, the options shown are perfect – just a hint or a touch.
Montce showed a high-waisted option with strategically placed silver and gold lightning bolts on the triangle bikini top. Rocky Gathercole showed incredibly embellished and sexy options as well as Elie Madi.
Luli Fama, Scandinavian, and Angel Brinks showed options that were just enough and beautifully done. The 8th Continent toed the line and took the risk to show some of the shiniest options for summer 2018.
#11. Funny Prints and Patterns
Clever, funny and sarcastic prints are showing up on cover-ups, two pieces, and one pieces. A play on words here and there has shown that it is not just for a cute T-shirt. Off Duty Mermaid, and Bae Watch are popular options, but those graphics that show things like hairy men’s chests or sharks coming up for a quick bite are out and about as well.
#12. Mismatched Bikini Sets
Truthfully, any swimsuit can be tastefully mismatched if it meets your own style requirements, but several designers chose to give the options intentionally. The runway for Montce showed off a few perfectly paired pieces that were not of the pattern or color.
Maaji did the same with a lot of earthy colors and alluring prints. For Love & Lemons showed off an interesting bikini that was striped with a ruffled, V-neck straps and off-shoulder top with a pair of polka-dot bottoms.
#13. High-Waisted Two Pieces
High-waisted two pieces have been hailed as a vintage godsend among the summer 2018 swimwear trends. This trend has been building steam and gaining ground more reliably for the past few years than any other. High fashion options have been shown but it never really took off and picked up to official trend status until last year and thankfully this will continue to be a summer 2018 swimsuit trend.
Nearly every swimsuit runway featured a high-waist option. Montce had several in different shades and patterns and colors. Seafolly and Issa De Mar made certain to include at least one option in their shows as well. Aguaclara provided a few that were boldly printed and even tasseled.
#14. Matching Swimwear and Cover-Ups
Acacia ran with the concept of full look coordination for the 2018 swimsuit trends. The runway show features tons of stunning options in coordinated, eye-catching prints. The cuts ranged, allowing options for everyone with accompanying cover-ups of varying lengths and styles for multiple body types.
Aguaclara showed several pieces that could easily be paired together to go from brunch to the beach to dinner if needed. The prints on that runway were amazing and complex, but clearly beautiful.
#15. Suspenders, Belts and Harnesses
Although the need for suspenders, belts and harnesses on swimwear is negligible at best, fashion does not always need to fully adhere to functionality, which allows for more fun. The summer 2018 swimwear trends have plenty of fun included.
This trend showed up on several different swimsuit cuts, like the high-waisted halter and triangle bikinis on the Hot As Hell and The 8th Continent runways. Prey Swim by Audrina Patridge actually had a version of the suspender style built into the bikini bottoms.
The harness style in the Lila Nikole runway was very interesting. Beach Bunny had a black leather halter with a fluffy neck showing for a touch of ‘bad girl chic’.
#16. String Bikinis
String bikinis for the summer 2018 are trending with a lot more strings than before. The designs, which may make them less ideal for tanning unless intricate tan lines are your thing, are still a lot of fun. The best thing about string bikinis is the functionality of some, if the laces are real, not decoration. Need a bit of space, adjust the lace.
Frankies Bikinis had plenty of options, of course. Luli Fama featured string bikinis with a plethora of designs on hips and busts, lace-up tops and even some with a little tassel on the end, covering more than one trend again!
Another multi trend covering a set of string bikinis is the high-waisted string bikini, like the printed Hot As Hell options. Sinesia Karol showed a nude string bikini with a more traditional style but a beautiful sheen to it that touches on the clever trend of material usage.
Risqué and stunning options were also provided by Cirone Swim. Beach Bunny had an option that mirrored lingerie, but as a string bikini.
#17. Striped Swimsuits
Swimwear always includes patterns, and one of the most predominantly seen patterns on the summer 2018 swimwear runways was stripes. One- and two-piece options came in striped prints, some placed strategically, some covering the entirety of the swimsuit.
Gottex, for example, showed gem-like colors in stripes on swimsuits and cover-ups. Hammock featured a striped top on a high-waisted two piece. Sinesia Karol manipulated the stripes to follow the shape of the strapless top and still featured them horizontally on the bottom.
A belted, striped one piece strolled down the Bianca Coletti runway, and Hot As Hell used vertical printed stripes accented with characters on an interesting two piece. Stripes with other patterns over them also showed up on the runway, like a few amazingly colorful options by Mister Triple X.
#18. Soft Pastel Colors
Beach Bunny showed off the very popular sky blue on several of their summer 2018 bathing suits, which popped amazingly against the tanned and darker skinned models. Hot As Hell, Sports Illustrated, Luli Fama and a lot of other brands made excellent use of softer shades like the lightest of purples, spun sugar pink and sky blue on their 2018 swimsuits. Aguaclara used a variety of shades but certainly included the soft baby blue on their runway as well.
The ‘Thong Song’ by Sisqo will always be relevant as long as thongs exist, but the breakthrough of this swimwear trend for 2018 includes the recently revamped and released update of the song.
Thongs are not incredibly complex, they are more the vehicle of revelation for a great butt, and several designers took this route of design, quite likely while humming one version or another of the Thong Song at the time. For Love & Lemons, KAOHS, Montce, Courtney Allegra, Lolli Swim, and Salty Mermaid have all put thong swimsuits on the runway for the summer 2018 swimwear trends.
#20. Velvet Swimwear
Not every concept seems right immediately – let’s be real a moment. Velvet is an impractical fabric for a swimsuit with the sand and sun and salt, fresh or chlorinated water, and then the process of washing often is not conducive to any sort of longevity for the fabric, right? Actually, designers are creating velvet swimsuits for summer 2018 in every possible cut, style and silhouette in a functional velvet designed to hold up!
As with the velvet we expected, the colors are beautiful, prismatic in some cases and easily gorgeous and eye-catching from every angle. ASOS has a stunning velvet one piece with deep plunging V-neck in a soft pink tinged purple textured velvet.
Triangl, Frankies Bikinis have options, and Trina Turk has two stunning velveteen one pieces as well. Albertine Santiago mixed velvet with lycra, and Emiliano Rinaldi showed velvet and netting in a very cool one piece as well.
#21. Unconventional Cover-Ups
Cover-ups were a whole different concept on the runway this year, borrowing from the summer 2018 fashion trends in other areas. For example, the plastic fashion trend that started out with panels in clothing decades ago during the space race really began showing up again in the last year or so from panels to full blown pieces. Plastic pants were back as an option to cover up your bathing suit without actually covering anything.
Hot As Hell designed cover-ups that basically appeared like lingerie, but fit the criteria of covering up the bathing suit in some capacity. The 8th Continent, and Elie Madi showed billowing, dramatic cover-ups adorned with embellishments. Beach Bunny had fluffball covered shimmering sheer cover-ups as well.
One of the hottest summer 2018 swimwear trends that have actually been around a long time in hood and baddie girl culture is the ultra cropped hoodie – basically a neckline, a hoodie and sleeves that were typically just worn with a tank in fall are now being used as swimwear cover-up.
These showed up on the KAOHS runway and have been reblogged, Tweeted and Instagrammed by the huge following of people who already wear them, and moreover, this fun trend will be around for a while. Beach pants in all manner of prints, patterns and sheers fluttered down the runway as well.
