Last night’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017 was quite a show indeed, as it took Shanghai by storm with its 55 models from 20 different countries, and an 88-piece dream array of lingerie proposals that wholly celebrated Victoria’s Secret’s 22-year history.
It brought, in fact, high-end fashion designers on stage, leaving us speechless and eager for more haute couture x Victoria’s Secret collaborations. It also injected a much-appreciated dose of self-confidence and glamour in each of us, as the show models’ self-assured struts are always contagious to say the least. The 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show left us also with a few things to ponder on, which will probably change a few points of views on the show itself, too.
Being one of the most anticipated shows of the year isn’t, in fact, that easy, when it comes to both the organizers and the models (who were all very excited, as seen in the behind-the-scene videos and photos we checked on Instagram). All in all, however we must say the overall 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show came out pretty magnificently.
There were a few ups and downs as well as some unforgettable moments, too, and you can find them all summed up below for you, while eagerly waiting for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017 to air on CBS on November 28th at 10 PM EST (which is very soon, so make sure to clear your calendar and enjoy one of the fashion industry’s most appreciated yearly traditions!).
2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show: The Models and The Musicians
The 50+ team of the Victoria’s Secret Angels and lingerie models, who went all the way up to Shangai, included a few VS pillars, such as Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Lily Aldridge, and Candice Swanepoel (who opened the show), as well as new faces. The latter included acclaimed runway models of the moment Grace Bol, Vanessa Moody, and Dasha Khlystun, who we bet will return to the show in the years to come.
Other VS 2017 faces included beloved Stella Maxwell, Bella Hadid, Jasmine Tookes, Josephine Skriver, Lais Ribeiro, Martha Hunt, Romee Strijd, Sara Sampaio, Taylor Hill, Sui He, Liu Wen, and Elsa Hosk.
As for the missing ones, the biggest names included Behati Prinsloo, who was actually set to return for this show but had to take a year off due to her second pregnancy with proud parent, husband and singer Adam Levine, Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner. The Keeping up with the Kardashians star just signed a mega deal with Italian lingerie brand La Perla, so we guess we won’t see her again at a Victoria’s Secret Show for a while.
As for the performers, those behind the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017 outdid themselves, indeed. For this edition, they asked Harry Styles (who wore a jaw-dropping Gucci suit), Miguel, Jane Zhang (a Chinese superstar), and Leslie Odom Junior to join the models onstage, and we bet things got wild and fun, for sure.
Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra 2017 and Winged Creations
27-year-old Lais Ribeiro was the Fantasy Bra model for this VS Fashion Show event, and she just looked beyond stunning while wearing it.
This year’s Fantasy Bra took more than 350 hours to be made, and came embellished with nearly 6,000 gemstones. It weighs more than 600 carats and features yellow sapphires and blue topaz in 18 karats. Named “Champagne Nights Fantasy Bra”, it was designed by notorious jeweller Mouawad, and costs circa $2 million (just in case you were looking for a Christmas present in advance).
The “Champagne Nights Fantasy Bra” wasn’t, however, the sole high-end part of the fashion show. After endless months of speculation, we finally got to admire Olivier Rousteing’s winged creations for the year’s biggest night, and they didn’t disappoint us. As if things weren’t exciting enough, Balmain’s creative director is also set to debut an Olivier Rousteing x Victoria’s Secret capsule collection on December 6th, which we already know is destined to fly off the shelves within hours.
“The Victoria’s Secret team have been invited to my Balmain shows many times, and I have also been a guest on the VS front row,” Rousteing told British Vogue backstage. “A year ago they came to me and said, why don’t we do something together? We came up with the punk theme, which is something really new for me.”
Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017: The Main Themes and Looks
As always, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017 was divided into several main themes. And, as good things never change, one specific theme gained the upper hand becoming the Internet’s most discussed one.
As for the sections, this VS Fashion Show 2017 kicked off with a “Punk Angel” theme, which featured Olivier Rousteing’s winged looks. Then it was time for the “Goddesses” section, which saw all the models adorned with Greco-Roman-inspired embellishments. Needless to say, this one instantly became viral as soon as the first pictures of the show became available online and on the main social media platforms.
The third theme was dubbed the “Porcelain Angel,” and brought on stage a collection of blue and white designs inspired by the Ming dynasty vases. Last but not least, the last section was the multicultural “Nomadic Angels,” and was meant to celebrate the 50+ models’ cultures.
Given the show’s variety of themes, the looks were equally eclectic and versatile. The 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show included, in fact, everything from ethnic-inspired beaded leitmotifs to total-black, glam-rock-infused patterns, treating those who love softer and romantically elegant looks to something to look forward to, as well.
Of course, the show took care of its millennial audience too, dipping some of its pieces into a certified millennial pink hue and, needless to say, cascades of glitter.
It is interesting to notice how the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017 ensembles were less wrapped up in athleisure-inspired staples compared to the ones from last year, although the sporty-chic motif was still present here and there (especially the sweatshirts).
All in all, the collection was beyond sexy, for sure.
Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017: The Most Discussed Controversy
One cannot talk about the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai without mentioning what happened to it-girl and supermodel Gigi Hadid.
Bella Hadid’s elder sister, actually, headed to China this year, but was forced to drop out of the show at the very last minute because she was (reportedly) denied a Chinese Visa. Although her fans were surely waiting for her return, and she revealed her sadness for not being able to make it to the show on her social media channels, the Chinese audience wasn’t that keen about her participation.
Back in September, the 22-year-old model was seen mocking Asian people on a video (posted by her sister Bella), squinting her eyes while she held up a cookie in the shape of Buddha. As soon as her presence on the show was announced, many Chinese people wrote back in anger on the VS social channels, as well as on Weibo (a sort of Instagram, which is extremely popular in Asia), boycotting her participation.
Hadid did apologize for the video and was pulled out of the show, and no one knows if she will ever come back.
What’s the Legacy of This Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show?
The 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featured, as seen, many ups and downs, and there are surely a few things to improve. It did, however, begin a much-awaited conversation about westernized beauty standards and cultures, leaving the doors open for more diversity and cultural representation (rather than appropriation) in the feature of the fashion industry.
It also proved that Victoria’s Secret (as brand) cares about its clientele more that we thought it did, and that’s a good thing to know, for sure.
