When it comes to finding a way to keep your hair back this season and still look chic, you’ll have plenty of options. From the perpetually growing adoration of butterfly clips and hair barrettes in general to the love of headbands, it seems that many of our favorite staple hair accessories have returned. Along with this, the need for escapism is seemingly hitting the high, with plenty of the hair accents used highlighting this.
So, if you’re more interested in escaping the styles that you wore a decade ago, have no fear because there will still be plenty of options for you to choose from. Veils are the main arrival that captured this look, pulling in a bit of Regency glamor to our boring lives. Opposite to veils, the fully modern look of accessorizing your hair part has become a massive trend in and of itself. But enough of my summary, you want all the details – don’t you?
#1. Sidle up
Whether you want to clip back a few strands of hair from your face or add extra delicate details to your outfit with these sleek accessories, using hair barrettes is an accessory trend for winter that isn’t going anywhere. When it came to the glossy blowouts at Chanel, the simple clips gave a classic and almost retro feeling – something that was transferred across the Atlantic, like in the case of the monochromatic clips also used at Alice + Olivia.
Along with the retro appeal, Fendi and Simone Rocha also heavily relied on barrettes to keep hair away from the models’ faces, while Conner Ives drew inspiration from the 2000s in the form of butterfly clips (a very 13-going-on-30 look if you were to ask me!).
#2. When Size Actually Matters
The heading might be a joke, but as far as hair clips go, it’s actually quite true. From beaded motifs playing their elemental role at Simone Rocha to the increasingly large leather bands with the logo on them at Trussardi, this was an accessory trend that wouldn’t let up. Perhaps part of the appeal was simply in the eye-catching power of the barrette, but whatever led creative directors and stylists to find solace in this look, we are certainly glad.
#3. Put a Band on It
Headbands proved to be the crowning glory of the fall/winter 2022-2023 hair accessory trends. Used at Dior to add an extra detail to the tightly wound braids of the models, headbands provided a lovely accent. The lovely thing about this accessory is that there are infinite possibilities in how to use it. For instance, it was Roksanda that leaned into the look of black ribbons, but Eudon Choi went with the tougher option of a leather band.
#4. Gemstone Partings
Side parts might be the reigning popular part of this fall season, but if you want to continue to embrace the middle part, then glamourizing your scalp could be the next cool move. Used on nearly all the models who walked for Christian Siriano and on a few models at Bronx and Banco, this trend will be perfect for any fall festivals you plan to head to. So, make sure to run to the store and find all the adhesive crystal gems you can get!
#5. Tying It up
The popular spring and summer look of tied-up hair scarves and hair ties has slowly made its way into the fall and winter in the form of tighter wrapped cords. Giving the look of a sultry spy, tight black leather was most prominent at Annakiki and even PatBo. While Ulla Johnson also embraced the look as well, the options from the brand’s runway were a bit looser.
#6. Beauty in the Bow
Given fashion’s addictive personality when it comes to trends, the obsession with hair bows doesn’t seem likely to be going anywhere. Mainly presented at Brandon Maxwell and Ulla Johnson in the form of tied-up hair scarves, delicate bows are proving to be the feminine detail that is to die for this season.
#7. “Veil of Sweet Illusion”
From Lanvin to Blumarine, headbands with attached veils were played up for maximum dramatic effect. Surprisingly, Blumarine took on a more vintage aesthetic with a white veil and a pink rose pressed close to the model’s face, giving an ethereal and otherworldly feel to the outfit. However, it was Lanvin that embraced the futuristic take on the retro garment, with a twisting band and heavily starched veil making an almost alien appearance on the runway.
#8. Draped Y2K Hair Accessories
If you take the chance to rock youthful Y2K-inspired fashion as the weather gets warmer, then threading some colorful beads and jewels through your hair will absolutely add to the flowy skirts and bangles. Beads were one of the more joyous fall 2022 hair accessories, especially threaded as they were through braids like at Germanier.
Models with long, loose hair at Givenchy rocked draped bejeweled beads, giving a modern and fierce look to the otherwise simple hairstyles. There were also some fun Y2K butterfly hair clips spotted at Conner Ives in different sizes and colors.
