If your skin drinks up every body cream you’ve ever rubbed into it and then asked for more, then you might need one of the best body butters. Rich and sumptuous, body butters outdo creams when it comes to softening the skin and locking moisture into it. They have a thicker texture and a high percentage of oils and butters, which makes them an ideal choice for those with dry skin.

Body butters come from all kinds of brands, at different price points and with slightly different ingredients and scents. We’ve selected the best body butters you can buy for every preference, skin type, and budget level to give your skin the most luxurious nourishment.

Our Picks of the Best Body Butters

From affordable to luxury to natural beauty, here you have 15 body butters worth giving a try!

Best Overall
Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter
Josie Maran

This luxurious product from Josie Maran perfectly captures what we want out of a body butter. It has a whipped formula that’s just soft and airy enough to rub into the skin easily but still has that richness that dry skin needs.

The main ingredient in this body butter is argan oil, a light, non-comedogenic oil that’s quite rich in vitamin E to soothe the skin and protect it from premature aging. It also includes aloe vera, shea butter, and glycerin. Together, these natural ingredients make for a formula that offers some hydration and occlusion all on its own.

There is nothing extreme about this body butter, which means it can work for all skin types as a regular go-to, although it won’t be particularly reparative for extreme dryness. Even those with sensitive skin can give it a try since there’s an unscented option in addition to 3 other fragrances (Vanilla Apricot happens to be our favorite). You can find it at Sephora

Key Features

  • Size: 8 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Argan oil, aloe vera, shea butter, glycerin
  • Fragrance: Unscented, vanilla-apricot, citrus, or vanilla bean
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • Balanced whipped texture
  • Comprehensive moisturization
  • Argan oil offers soothing and anti-aging benefits
  • Suits all skin types

  • Not heavy enough for extreme dryness
Best Budget
Tree Hut 24 Hour Intense Hydrating Shea Body Butter
Tree Hut

In general, body butters are a little more expensive than creams since they contain a higher percentage of oils and less water. As a result, they’re a little more expensive to produce. However, if you’re on a budget, you still have some amazing options, in part thanks to Tree Hut.

Impressively, these body butters from Tree Hut don’t compromise on ingredients. Organic shea butter is the key ingredient, and it shows up nice and high on the ingredient list. The formula includes a few other lovely botanical emollients, like safflower oil and cocoa butter. It moisturizes all on its own since it also includes some glycerin and water.

The texture is impressively silky and non-greasy, primarily thanks to some light synthetics that thin it out a little to add an airy, velvety feel. This intelligent hybrid of natural oils and elegant synthetics is the reason why this formula feels so great on the skin despite being affordable since brands that stick to all-natural formulas have to compromise on either skin feel or price point. You can order it from Amazon, where it’s available in a wide range of scents for every preference.

Key Features

  • Size: 7 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, safflower oil, cocoa butter, glycerin, dimethicone
  • Fragrance: Many scents available
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • Incredible texture
  • Very budget-friendly
  • Thoroughly moisturizing
  • Wide range of fragrance options

  • Not an all-natural formula
Runner-Up for Best Budget
Soap & Glory The Righteous Butter Body Butter
Soap & Glory

This budget-friendly body butter from Soap & Glory isn’t particularly fancy or complex, but it works well, it doesn’t cost much, and it’s got some really fun packaging. What more can one ask for?

This is a creamy body butter formula with water, shea butter, glycerin, as well as a range of both natural oils and silky synthetic emollients. It works well and has an incredibly elegant texture that works well across different skin types (even those with oily skin can enjoy it!). It has a fairly strong rose and citrus scent that’s very pretty but might be irritating to those with sensitive skin or noses.

The tub it comes in holds over 10 Oz of product for a lower price than a lot of the other options on our list, making it a very affordable body butter. It’s available at Ulta

Key Features

  • Size: 10.1 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, glycerin, cocoa butter
  • Fragrance: Rose and citrus
  • Cruelty-Free: It’s complicated

  • Affordable
  • Nicely moisturizing
  • Great for all skin types

  • Very strong fragrance
Best Luxury
54 Thrones Ivorian Cocoa + Ghanaian Coconut Beauty Butter
54 Thrones

This all-natural body butter is quite pricey, but it’s also sumptuous and luxurious with nothing but ethically sourced ingredients. The formula is designed to work for both the face and body. It’s a waterless body butter, which means that there is zero water taking up space (although it also means that it can’t offer direct hydration to the skin).

It’s best used as a final step to lock in moisture, either immediately after a shower or after you’ve used a lighter lotion. It’s very thick, so use it sparingly to avoid a greasy skin feel.

Since shea butter is the main ingredient, it does leave a slight residue on the skin but not an overly greasy one. It also includes coconut oil, jojoba oil, and baobab oil, which makes for a very rich formula that’s best for dry skin, and may be too rich for normal or oily skin.

The final touch of luxury here comes from the incredible cocoa scent and the hygienic, ultra-pretty gold tube package. Does it really merit the price? Not necessarily, but if you want to treat yourself to something that’ll make you feel like a queen, pick it up from Nordstrom!

Key Features

  • Size: 1.7 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, jojoba oil, baobab oil, coconut oil cocoa extract
  • Fragrance: Chocolate
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • No fillers, just 100% oils and plant butters
  • Very skin-repairing for dry skin
  • Ethically sourced ingredients
  • Comes in a hygienic tube

  • Very expensive
  • Doesn’t hydrate the skin directly
Best Natural Formula
Weleda Skin Food Body Butter

This gorgeous body butter is formulated based on Weleda’s iconic Skin Food cream. Fans of the original rich cream will probably enjoy this body butter, which has a similar herbaceous scent and the same rich, skin-repairing texture.

It’s made with high quantities of sunflower oil and cocoa butter, which give it a very rich texture. It’s especially impressive at repairing severe dryness, although for those with normal skin, it might be overkill.

The formula also includes the botanical extracts Weleda is known for, like soothing calendula and chamomile. These ingredients are fantastic for sensitive skin, although if you have issues with fragrance, it may not work for you. Order it online from Dermstore

Key Features

  • Size: 5 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Sunflower oil, cocoa butter, glycerin, shea butter
  • Fragrance: Herbal
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • Rich and reparative
  • Excellent for very dry skin
  • Includes soothing botanical extracts

  • A little heavy for normal or oily skin
Best for Oily Skin
The Body Shop Coconut Body Butter
The Body Shop

The Body Shop’s body butters have reached a special status. They’ve been around for years, and they’re known for their fun factor, which comes from delicious fragrances. Shopping for body butter at The Body Shop is a selection process reminiscent of shopping for ice cream, and coconut is definitely a delicious, winning scent.

It’s a water-based body butter, which means that it both hydrates the skin and restores its oil levels. The formula is rich in shea butter, but it contains quite a few other oils that help to lighten it up, making it a nice choice for oily skin (although it’ll work for other skin types as well).

Despite The Body Shop’s branding, we think it’s important to mention that this isn’t an all-natural body butter. It contains silicone quite high on the ingredient list. This helps to improve the texture and give a silky skin feel but will disappoint those who want an all-natural product. If you’d like a great texture and don’t mind the silicones, you can buy it at Ulta, or Amazon.

Key Features

  • Size: 7 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, silicone, glycerin, cocoa butter, coconut oil
  • Fragrance: Coconut
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • Very moisturizing
  • Great coconut smell
  • Nice, silky texture

  • Not as natural as branding makes it seem

Best for Rough Skin
Gold Bond Radiance Renewal Whipped Shea Butter
Gold Bond

Looking for a body butter that’ll do a little something extra? This is the one. It’s a urea-based body butter that does wonders for rough skin, keratosis pilaris, or ingrown hairs. Urea is an incredible ingredient that acts as both a humectant and a gentle exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin and leave behind nothing but smoothness.

It’s a very comprehensive moisturizer, thanks to both the urea and glycerin. Dimethicone and shea butter both give an occlusive effect, as well. The texture is whipped and airy, so combined with the high amount of dimethicone, it means that it feels incredibly silky on the skin. However, the urea does leave behind a slight residue.

The final thing we appreciate about this body butter is just how affordable it is! Even if you’re on a budget, it will still be within reach. Order it from Amazon!

Key Features

  • Size: 8 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Urea
  • Fragrance: Coconut
  • Cruelty-Free: No

  • Includes exfoliating, smoothing urea
  • Very silky
  • Comprehensively moisturizing
  • Budget-friendly

  • Leaves a slight residue on the skin

Best for Extreme Dryness
Lancôme Nutrix Royal Body Nourishing & Restoring Body Butter

Body butters are rich by definition, but this option from Lancôme really takes it to the next level, with a buttery, heavy formula that locks moisture in and repairs severe dryness quite well.

The product description focuses on some very fancy ingredients, like royal jelly and hazelnut peptides. However, we think the real reason why this body butter is so impressive is the simple stuff: occlusives, like mineral oil and dimethicone, create a layer over the skin that prevents transepidermal water loss incredibly well, and there is also squalane, which mimics the skin’s natural oils to offer a softening effect.

The only drawback to this body butter is that it’s strongly fragranced. Normally, that isn’t an issue for us, but we do wish this reparative butter was also available to those with very sensitive skin who could benefit from it the most.

The formula is definitely thick, but it spreads easily, and it’s especially effective at remedying severe dryness and roughness. We’d recommend picking it up for winter! Get it from Nordstrom

Key Features

  • Size: 6.7 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Squalane, mineral oil, glycerin, dimethicone, shea butter
  • Fragrance: Floral
  • Cruelty-Free: No

  • Very rich for severe dryness
  • Spreads easily
  • Skin-softening effects

  • Heavily fragranced

Best Pure Shea Butter
L’Occitane 100 Percent Pure Shea Butter

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably noticed that almost all body butters include a respectable amount of shea butter. If you want, you can cut out all those extras and opts for the pure stuff instead.

Shea butter is rich in a few moisturizing fatty acids, including linoleic acid, which is especially soothing to the skin. It’s very occlusive, which means that it prevents moisture evaporation, making it a fantastic post-shower treatment.

It’s also rich in antioxidants, including vitamin E and epicatechin gallate (also found in green tea), which fortifies its soothing action and helps keep premature aging at bay. On its own, it’s a little thick, so it doesn’t take a bit of work to get it to melt, but it doesn’t have the greasy feeling of many other plant butters and oils.

You can certainly find it from raw-material suppliers for cheaper, but buying it from L’Occitane guarantees a more stable texture, trustworthy sourcing, and chic packaging. Find it at Sephora

Key Features

  • Size: 5.2 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-Free
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • Pure shea butter has soothing and anti-aging properties
  • Very occlusive
  • Doesn’t feel greasy

  • Not the cheapest way of procuring shea butter

Most Hydrating
Clinique Deep Comfort Body Butter

Body butters can definitely hydrate the skin, but it’s not what they’re known for! That’s why this body butter is unique: it’s loaded with humectants, which are ingredients that actively pull water into the skin.

It’s still a body butter, so it still includes a high amount of shea butter, although there aren’t any other plant oils in the mix. Instead, silicone and a few other emollients add that primer-like texture. Then, the humectancy comes from glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and butylene glycol.

It’s also a great choice if you have an issue with fragrance since, like all Clinique products, it’s fragrance-free. Without the scent, it doesn’t provide that aromatic experience that a lot of body butters do, and some users may find it a little boring. However, if your skin is sensitive, boring is best! You can pick it up from Nordstrom.

Key Features

  • Size: 6.7 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, glycerin, butylene glycol, silicone, hyaluronic acid
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free
  • Cruelty-Free: No

  • Very hydrating
  • Silky texture
  • Suitable for sensitive skin

  • A little boring

Best Soothing
Brown Girl Jane Heal Whipped CBD Body Butter
Brown Girl Jane

When you need something a little extra soothing, CBD should be your go-to. This hemp-derived ingredient is exceptional in topical body butters because it helps to calm the skin while also alleviating deeper soreness.

We like this butter from Brown Girl Jane, specifically, for a few reasons. First, it includes 400 mg of CBD, which is a high enough amount to see real topical results. Beyond that, it’s simply a lovely, moisturizing body butter. It manages to both hydrate and moisturize, with a whipped texture that’s light and not overly greasy (although it does leave behind a small residue). It’s expensive in comparison to some of the other options on our list, but considering the amount of CBD, the price is perfectly reasonable.

We also love that Brown Girl Jane is a small brand founded and owned by black women, with an incredible commitment to quality assurance and testing. Buy it at Nordstrom!

Key Features

  • Size: 4 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: CBD, safflower oil, cocoa butter, glycerin, shea butter
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-Free
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • CBD has potent soothing effect
  • Moisturizes and hydrates
  • Ethical brand owned by black women

  • A little pricey
  • Can leave a slight residue

Best Scented
Kiehl’s Since 1851 Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter
Kiehl’s Since 1851

From Kiehl’s, we’ve got a creamy body butter with a delicious scent. It has a honey fragrance that’s sweet and warm but without being overly saccharine. We think it’s the main selling point with this body butter. It’s a little expensive, and as a moisturizer, it’s not particularly special, but the scent keeps many people returning to it again and again.

Beyond that, it’s simply a decently moisturizing option with a really pleasant whipped texture. The formula includes some natural moisturizers, including shea butter, soy proteins, and jojoba oil, although its incredible texture is mostly thanks to some synthetic emollients. It’s a great choice for dry and oily skin alike since it moisturizes thoroughly without leaving behind a film. Buy it from Sephora or Nordstrom!

Key Features

  • Size: 8 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, jojoba oil, soy protein, squalane
  • Fragrance: Honey
  • Cruelty-Free: No

  • Delicious honey scent
  • Lovely texture
  • Effective moisturizer for all skin types

  • A little expensive considering the effects

Best with SPF
Supergoop! Body Butter Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40

Multi-tasking products always make us happy, but especially when one of their tasks is to protect us from the sun. This formula combines the deep moisturizing effects of a body butter with a 40 SPF, making it a wonderful summer product for those with dry skin. The only drawback to this product is that it’s a little pricey, even compared to other Supergoop! sunscreens.

This body butter’s moisturizing action comes from synthetic emollients as well as hydrating glycerin. It’s a comprehensive moisturizer for dry and normal skin, with a very light, non-greasy texture. Unlike many other options, it’s not a natural product, but we don’t mind – we’re perfectly happy with effective synthetic ingredients, especially when a brand doesn’t try and market itself as all-natural.

The SPF filters in this formula don’t leave a white cast on the skin, so it looks great in photos and will also work with dark skin tones without any issues. If you’d like to try it, find it at Nordstrom

Key Features

  • Size: 5.7 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: SPF filters, glycerin, sea buckthorn oil
  • Fragrance: Clove, eucalyptus, and vanilla
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • High sun protection
  • No white cast
  • Comprehensive moisturization

  • A little pricey

Best Tummy Butter
Mama Mio The Tummy Rub Butter
Mama Mio

This powerfully antioxidant body butter is designed specifically for pregnant bellies, but you can use it even if you’re not expecting. It’s a wonderfully antioxidant formula with a lovely texture thanks to the addition of coconut alkanes.

Coconut alkanes are a natural silicone alternative that’s able to replicate that silky skin feel. This means that this formula feels as nice as a synthetic while containing mostly natural ingredients.

As a moisturizer, this formula relies on shea butter, aloe vera, and almond oil, which offer a balanced level of both hydration and protection. That’s how this body butter is able to prevent stretch marks, although admittedly, we think that would also apply to most other body butters on our list. We actually think it might be more promising as an anti-aging treatment since it includes added antioxidants like vitamin E and hydroxyacetophenone that protect from premature aging.

It has a floral-citrus natural scent, but since some women find fragrance extra-irritating during pregnancy, there’s also an unscented version. You can pick up either one at Dermstore. 34

Key Features

  • Size: 4.1 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, coconut alkanes, vitamin E, sweet almond oil
  • Fragrance: Lavender and mint
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Excellent texture
  • All-natural ingredients

  • Cheaper body butters will also protect from stretch marks

Most Fun
Truly Unicorn Fruit Body Butter

If you like your skincare to be fun, this is the body butter to pick up! The rainbow-colored cream looks like whipped frosting and smells just as sweet. If you love all things colorful and pretty, you’ll definitely enjoy having it in your bathroom cabinet.

As a body butter, it’s on the thick side with very little water or humectants. This makes it deeply reparative and highly effective at locking moisture into the skin. This also means that it’s heavy and greasy, especially if you’re used to commercial body butters. We’d recommend using it over a lighter, hydrating lotion or immediately after a shower to guarantee that you enjoy its full benefits.

In addition to a lot of different body butters and oils, the formula also includes plant extracts from green tea, eggplant, acai berries, and more, which means that it can have some skin-preserving antioxidant properties. You can find it at Ulta.

Key Features

  • Size: 4 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, coconut oil, kokum butter, acai berry extract, green tea extract
  • Fragrance: Sweet and fruity
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

  • Fun color and scent
  • Deeply rich and moisture-sealing formula
  • Made with reparative oils and butters
  • Antioxidant extracts

  • Heavy and thick
  • A little greasy

How We Selected the Best Body Butters?

When putting together our selection of the best body butters, these were the key factors we considered that make for a fantastic product.

The main thing a body butter needs to do is to occlude the skin, which means that it needs to create a barrier layer that prevents moisture evaporation. Our skin is naturally able to retain water and stay hydrated with the help of sebum, which is the oil that we naturally produce.

However, when the skin gets dry or becomes compromised because of weather or other external factors, it’s no longer able to retain moisture, which is why it becomes rough, painful, or itchy.

A great body butter will include ingredients that help to restore the skin’s barrier layer and prevent that moisture evaporation. The most common ingredient for the job is shea butter, but occasionally we also see body butters with mineral oil, cocoa butter, or silicone, which also have an occlusive effect.

Texture and Skin Feel

All body butters are quite thick, at least when compared to body lotions or creams. However, that doesn’t mean that they need to feel heavy or greasy. We looked primarily for body butters that felt silky or had a lighter, whipped texture. A body butter that leaves a slight, non-greasy film over the skin was acceptable to us, but we generally tried to avoid, including ones that left the skin feeling too greasy.

What to Look for in the Best Body Butter for You?

Comprehensive Hydration

A body butter is primarily occlusive, but it can also offer some direct hydration to the skin, which makes it a more comprehensive moisturizer. Hydrating body butters are made with some water as well as humectants, which are ingredients that absorb water and are able to deliver it to the skin.

Not all of the body butters we selected are able to hydrate the skin directly, but most of them are. If you’re looking for a body butter that you can use any time of the day for both hydration and occlusion, look for one that we describe as “hydrating” or “comprehensive.”

More so than any other body care product, the scent of a body butter makes a big difference. Unlike body lotions, body butters are slower to sink into the skin, so the fragrance they impart takes longer to fade. Because of that, body butters can sort of double as a light perfume, or they can act as a very good base for your actual perfume.

We selected body butters with a very wide range of fragrances to fit any taste, but we also included a few unscented and fragrance-free ones for those who have sensitive skin or fragrance allergies.

Ingredient Preference

Body butters are very popular with clean and natural beauty lovers, so in many of our reviews, we touched on whether a body butter has a natural formula or if it’s a little heavier on synthetics. We don’t mind a formula that includes synthetic ingredients since those ingredients are often very gentle on the skin, and they can offer a better texture.

However, we know it’s important to many of our readers, which is why we made sure to discuss it, especially in cases where a brand markets itself as “natural” despite using non-natural ingredients.

Compared to other skincare products, body butters are almost always a little more expensive. This is because plant oils are more expensive when compared to water, which is the main component in most creams and lotions. Other details, like branding, packaging, and more exotic natural ingredients, can also raise the price of a body butter.

Almost all of us want to avoid overspending, so we did make sure to include a few budget-friendly body butters, but we also still included some luxury options for those who want to treat themselves or impress someone with a gift.

What to Look for in the Best Body Butter for You?

To a certain extent, choosing a body butter is mostly about preferences when it comes to scent and ingredients. It’s still worth considering your skin type and needs, especially if you’re still trying to decide if body butter is the right moisturizer for you.

Dry Skin

Body butters are the ideal moisturizer for those with dry skin! After all, dry skin naturally lacks oils, which is exactly what body butters are able to restore. If you have dry skin, you cannot go wrong with any body butter. For severe dryness, however, we particularly recommend the ultra-rich Nutrix body butter from Lancôme

Just keep in mind that some body butters will be more hydrating than others, so if you choose a waterless option, make sure to use it right after a shower when your skin is already saturated with water. That way, the body butter can lock the water into your skin while also alleviating your dryness.

How to Choose the Best Body Butter for You?

Normal Skin

When you have normal skin, a body butter can be a nice treatment, especially for winter. You can use it all over your body, or just save it for the drier parts of your body like your feet and elbows. You will probably want to choose a more comprehensive and not overly greasy option, like the Josie Maran Argan Oil Body Butter, although you can simply select what sounds good based on your scent preference.

Oily Skin

Body butters are not a traditional choice for those with oily skin. Most people with oily skin don’t want to use such a heavy product, instead preferring lighter lotions or creams. However, if you happen to love the richer texture or have spots that get unusually dry, then a body butter can be nice.

Look for a body butter with a velvety texture and a bit of silicone since that kind of formula is least likely to make your skin feel greasy. The Body Shop’s Body Butter is an especially good choice for your needs.

Sensitive Skin

If your skin is easily irritated, finding a body butter can be a little more difficult. On the one hand, body butters are immensely soothing and healing thanks to their rich, protective texture. On the other hand, they’re often loaded with fragrance, which has the potential to irritate sensitive skin.

Look for a body butter that contains skin-soothing ingredients and is free from scents, like the CBD body butter from Brown Girl Jane or the Deep Comfort body butter from Clinique.
