17 Best Body Lotions for Every Skin Type

Heading into summer, we simply adore a body lotion! Unlike their cream counterparts, the best body lotions are very light and thin. They have a texture that sinks into the skin quickly without ever leaving a residue or oily layer. They hydrate well, although they’re usually not quite as effective for severely dry skin.

Best Body Lotions for Every Skin Type

All body lotions are light and lovely, but other than that, they’re all very different from one another. Some body lotions are very soothing and gentle, others are mostly designed to make you smell amazing, and others contain special ingredients intended to fight acne or premature aging.

Your body deserves the best body lotion for its needs! That’s why we’ve selected the best body lotions you can buy online, with a diverse curation that’ll suit all skin types. If you need a bit more help, we also added a buyer’s guide below to help you learn what to look for when shopping for body lotions by yourself.

1
Best Overall
L’Occitane Shea Butter Rich Body Lotion
L’Occitane Sephora.com
$34

When in doubt, L’Occitane always delivers exquisite body care with which you can’t go wrong. This body lotion is no different. It offers the perfect level of moisturization with a wonderful texture and impressive ingredients, which is why it’s easily our top choice. It’s not the cheapest body lotion on our list, but it feels like a luxury product!

Many body lotions are too light for dry skin, but that’s not the case here. This body lotion is made from shea butter as well as a few lighter plant oils, so it nourishes and softens the skin well, helping to make up for a natural lack of oils.

Despite the nourishing formula, it’s still light enough even for oily skin and has dimethicone, which adds a lovely silkiness. It smells beautiful, which is another little benefit that adds a sense of luxury. Purchase it from Sephora!

Key Features

  • Size: 8.4 Oz
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, glycerin, grape seed oil, apricot oil
  • Fragrance: Clean
  • Cruelty-Free: Not quite

Pros

  • Suitable for all skin types
  • Deeply moisturizing
  • Silky, light texture
  • Gorgeous scent

Cons

  • A little pricey
2
Best Budget
CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion
CeraVe Ulta.com
$12.99

This body lotion is the Internet’s darling. It has a formulation that works well across all skin types and is even fantastic for the face at a perfectly reasonable drugstore price.

Since it’s a lotion, it’s light and quick to sink into the skin. The blend is high on hydrating ingredients, so it’s fantastic for combating dehydration. It also includes a blend of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids that are known for their skin-repairing ability, especially following irritation. This, combined with the fact that this lotion is fragrance-free, makes for a wonderful option for those with sensitive skin.

The only thing that’s important to note is that there is a rare but vocal minority that does experience irritation of breakouts from CeraVe products. We think this is just what happens when a product is so widespread, but it’s still worth mentioning in case you’re one of those unlucky few. This is a good reminder that patch-testing new skincare is always important! If you’d like to give it a try, buy it at Ulta, or Amazon

Key Features

  • Size: 8-16 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, cholesterol, glycerin, dimethicone
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free
  • Cruelty-Free: No

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Appropriate for all skin types
  • Can be used on the face
  • Moisturizing and skin-repairing

Cons

  • Some users experience breakouts/irritation
3
Best Exfoliating
Paula’s Choice RESIST Skin Revealing Body Lotion 10% AHA
Paula’s Choice Paulaschoice.com
$28

Did you know you can use your body lotion to exfoliate your skin? This body lotion, from one of our favorite brands, contains 10% glycolic acid, so it offers both moisturization and peeling action all in one product.

If you’re not familiar, glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid that causes the skin to shed dead skin cells, which allows for thorough exfoliation without any friction or rubbing. It’s fantastic for those dealing with rough skin, ingrown hairs, or keratosis pilaris, and can even help with body acne (although salicylic acid is usually a more popular choice).

As with most lotions, this product has a light and quick-absorbing texture that’s very well-hydrating. It’s more occlusive than some of the other options on our list, thanks to a high amount of silicone. This also gives it a primer-like, velvety texture that’s pleasant for all skin types.

The formula is fragrance-free, which sadly doesn’t mean it’s entirely without a scent. The ingredients themselves have a slightly chemical or oily scent that’s not the most pleasant, although it does fade fairly quickly after you apply. If your skin doesn’t react well to fragrances, the raw scent is totally worth putting up with.

For some users, this level of exfoliation can be too intense for daily use, so you may want to limit yourself to only using it a few times a week. It’s available at Paula’s Choice, and Dermstore.

Key Features

  • Size: 7 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Glycolic acid, silicones, glycerin, shea butter
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Glycolic acid removes dead skin gently
  • Both hydrating and moisture-binding
  • Silky, primer-like texture

Cons

  • Fragrance-free formula sadly doesn’t smell great
4
Best Soothing
Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion
Aveeno Amazon.com
$8.99

This lotion is a sensitive skin classic. It’s not particularly special or fancy, but that’s exactly why so many people love it. It’s designed to be mild and soothing, and it’s actually classified as an over-the-counter skin protectant. It’s a decent choice for those dealing with inflammatory skin conditions, but it’s also great as a daily moisturizer.

The active ingredient is dimethicone, which offers skin-protective properties. The blend also includes oat flour, which has some anti-inflammatory effects. Aveeno used to use colloidal oatmeal in their products, which was even more potently soothing, but unfortunately, they’ve reverted to the more accessible ingredient.

Since it’s a lotion, the texture is light and fluid, so some users find that it’s not moisturizing enough on its own. For those with oily skin or who need something for daytime, however, we think it’s a fine option. Order it from Amazon

Key Features

  • Size: 2.5-18 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Dimethicone, oat flour, glycerin, petrolatum
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free
  • Cruelty-Free: No

Pros

  • Light and hydrating
  • Skin-soothing effects with oat flour
  • Protects the skin with dimethicone
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Newer formula is not as potent as the old one
5
Best Clean Formula
Nécessaire The Body Lotion – With Niacinamide
Nécessaire Sephora.com
$25

One of our favorite things is to see a body lotion’s ingredient list and think, ‘this looks like a face moisturizer.’ That’s certainly the case with this gorgeous lotion. It contains a fair amount of niacinamide (a.k.a. vitamin B3), an ingredient with antioxidant, soothing, moisturizing, and even anti-acne effects, which also happens to be one of our skincare obsessions.

Beyond the niacinamide, the rest of the formula is simple and hydrating with a lot of naturally derived oils and extracts, as well as peptides that may help keep the skin firm in the long term. It’s light and soft, with a texture that sinks in quickly without leaving a residue. It offers plenty of moisture for oily and normal skin, but those with dry skin may want something a little heavier layered on top.

One thing we take issue with is that It’s described as a ‘multivitamin lotion.’ While the lotion does include vitamins B3 and E, the claim that it includes vitamins A and C is misleading since those vitamins are only present via trace amounts in some of the plant extracts.

With that said, Nécessaire discloses the origins of all of the ingredients, and as a brand, they have made some very respectable commitments to sustainability. The formula is free from any controversial synthetics as well as potentially irritating fragrances, so it’s a great option for clean beauty buyers or anyone with sensitive skin. Get it from Sephora, or Nordstrom!

Key Features

  • Size: 6.8 Oz
  • Key Ingredients: Niacinamide, glycerin, shea butter glycerides, jojoba oil,
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Contains antioxidant and soothing niacinamide
  • Decently hydrating but light
  • Sustainable, clean formula
  • Great for sensitive skin

Cons

  • Not enough for dry skin
  • Dubious ‘multivitamin’ claim
6
Best CBD Formula
Lord Jones High CBD Formula Body Lotion
Lord Jones Sephora.com
$40

CBD is one of the hottest topical ingredients right now, and Lord Jones is one of the original brands to sell cosmetics infused with the good stuff. Research is still in its infancy, but it seems as though topical CBD can have a really wide range of effects, especially when it comes to inflammation and how it relates to pain, acne, premature aging, and more.

This formula, especially, is designed for cooling the skin and alleviating pain. In addition to 100 mg of CBD (a fairly high amount for a topical product), it also includes menthyl ethylamido oxalate, which is a cooling compound related to menthol. The combined action of the two ingredients offers real relief from pain.

As a body lotion, it works well, with a silky texture and excellent hydrating effects. However, it’s too expensive to use all over the body. Instead, we’d suggest using it to spot-treat only the areas where you need the blend of soothing and cooling effects. Shop for it at Sephora!

Key Features

  • Size: 1.69 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: CBD (100 mg), glycerin, shea butter, menthyl ethylamido oxalate
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free or scented
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • CBD may offer topical soothing effects
  • The cooling effect helps with irritation or pain
  • Hydrating and silky

Cons

  • Too expensive to use all over the body
7
Best Anti-Aging
Replenix Retinol Smooth + Tighten Body Lotion
Replenix Dermstore.com
$89

If you’re looking for a body product that’s as powerful as your facial anti-aging regimen, Replenix delivers. This body lotion is also a heavy-duty anti-aging treatment with some very impressive ingredients, and a price to match.

The key ingredient here is retinol, which is a powerful skin-regenerating ingredient related to vitamin A with a proven ability to reduce the look of wrinkles and to improve skin texture. The second ingredient of note is caffeine, which is naturally antioxidant but can also help firm the skin and might even be effective at reducing cellulite. Beyond that, there are barrier-restoring ceramides and antioxidant extracts galore, making for a very impressive ingredient list.

Seeing results with this kind of product takes months, not weeks, since the skin on our body is thicker than on the face, but as far as topical options go, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better body lotion. In addition to being anti-aging, it’s also a good formula. It hydrates the skin thoroughly, with a texture that works well for most skin types but especially normal and oily skin. Get it from Dermstore!

Key Features

  • Size: 6.7 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Retinol, caffeine, squalane, hyaluronic acid, ceramides
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Retinol has a skin-smoothing, anti-aging effect
  • Caffeine firms the skin
  • Light and hydrating

Cons

  • Expensive
8
Best Shimmer
Burt’s Bees Radiance Body Lotion
Burt’s Bees Amazon.com
$8.99

When we’re in the mood to show a bit of skin, a shimmery body lotion can really spice things up. From Burt’s Bees, this body lotion adds a hint of a glow to the skin along with a dose of moisture. It’s not quite as intense as a liquid highlighter, but instead, it offers a subtle sheen that’s incredibly flattering, especially when you’ve got a bit of a tan.

Beyond the glow, it’s simply a nice, light lotion. The formula has a very high percentage of water, so it’s quick to sink into the skin. It’s made mostly with natural ingredients like glycerin, sunflower oil, and coconut oil. It’s not the most moisturizing option on our list, but it offers a decent dose of hydration that’s enough for daytime. Pick it up from Amazon!

Key Features

  • Size: 6 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Glycerin, sunflower oil, coconut oil, mica for shimmer
  • Fragrance: Honey
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Gorgeous shimmer
  • Lightly hydrating
  • Natural formula

Cons

  • Not super moisturizing
9
Best Silicone-Free
Drunk Elephant Sili Body Lotion
Drunk Elephant Sephora.com
$20

Drunk Elephant’s venture into producing body care is an exciting one for any fans of their products. The lotion is formulated according to the brand’s stringent principles, so it’s free from silicones, mineral oil, fragrances, and alcohol. While we generally don’t have an issue with these ingredients, many clean beauty fans will appreciate that this option exists.

The ingredient list is long, composed of plant oils that are rich in beneficial fatty acids and antioxidants, as well as plant extracts and ceramides. It’s light, moisturizing, and barrier-restoring, but not very occlusive, so we wouldn’t recommend it for severe dryness but would still recommend it for sensitive skin.

Despite the clean, silicone-free formula, this lotion is still quite silky, thanks to the use of squalane and coconut alkanes. Coconut alkanes, especially, are a fantastic alternative to silicones, although they can be comedogenic for some users. If you have acne-prone skin, this lotion may not work for you. You can find it at Sephora.

Key Features

  • Size: 8 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Squalane, coconut alkanes, marula oil, ceramides
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free but with a natural almond scent
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Silky yet silicone-free
  • Great for sensitive skin
  • Barrier-restoring and antioxidant

Cons

  • May be comedogenic for some
10
Best for Acne-Prone Skin
CeraVe SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin
CeraVe Amazon.com
$18.99

We had to include just one more lotion from CeraVe, specifically for anyone dealing with body acne. This lotion is a dream for oily, breakout-prone skin thanks to its clever blend of light hydrating agents and acne-fighting salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid is, of course, a skincare superstar. This active ingredient cuts through oil to unclog pores, exfoliate away dead skin build-up, soothe the redness and swelling from blemishes, and even inhibit the acne bacteria.

Aside from the salicylic acid, this formula is actually quite similar to the CeraVe Daily Lotion, with a light texture and barrier-repairing ceramides. You could use it even if you have dry, acne-prone skin! In addition to helping with acne, it can also help with keratosis pilaris or ingrown hairs. It’s hard to find drawbacks with this product, although some users may dislike the natural scent of it since it’s fragrance-free. Order it from Amazon, or Ulta

Key Features

  • Size: 8 or 19 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Salicylic acid, ceramides, hyaluronic acid
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free
  • Cruelty-Free: No

Pros

  • Salicylic acid helps with body acne
  • Very hydrating
  • Light, pleasant texture

Cons

  • Odd scent
11
Best Urea Formula
Eucerin Intensive Repair Lotion
Eucerin Amazon.com
$19.60

If you have severely dry or flaky skin, nothing beats a urea lotion. If you’re not familiar, urea is a unique ingredient that attracts moisture into the skin at low percentages and actually helps to remove dead skin at higher percentages. We estimate that this lotion contains 10% urea, which means that it packs a double-punch of exfoliation and hydration.

Despite its exfoliating action, it’s very gentle on the skin, which is why it’s often recommended for conditions that make the skin rough or flaky, like psoriasis, eczema, and keratosis pilaris.

In addition to urea, this lotion also contains mineral oil, which creates a protective seal over the skin to lock in the lotion. It also includes sodium lactate, a neutralized form of lactic acid that is gentle and hydrating.

Because of the blend of mineral oil and urea, this formula is thicker than the average body lotion. It’s very occlusive, so those with oily skin may find it a little heavy and slow to sink in. However, if you have dry skin or flakiness, it’s a fantastic choice. Buy it on Amazon

Key Features

  • Size: 5-16.9 Oz
  • Key Ingredients: Urea, mineral oil, sodium lactate
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-Free
  • Cruelty-Free: No

Pros

  • Urea hydrates and exfoliates
  • Occlusive and hydrating blend moisturizes thoroughly
  • Can be used to treat dry, flaky, or rough skin

Cons

  • A little thick and slow to absorb
12
Best Scented
philosophy Amazing Grace Firming Body Emulsion
philosophy Sephora.com
$42

For fans of the iconic Amazing Grace perfume from Philosophy, this body lotion will be a dream. It’s a light lotion with a powerful fragrance that’s based specifically on the citrusy, floral perfume.

If you’re already using Amazing Grace as your daily scent, applying this lotion in the mornings will act as a base that’ll amplify the perfume gently and won’t clash with it. You can also just wear it alone for a softer version of the fragrance!

Despite the scent, this is still a lotion first, and a very decent one at that. It’s made with light yet nourishing oils like macadamia and olive oil, as well as glycerin for hydration. However, despite the name, there is nothing in this lotion that can firm the skin, which can be very disappointing. If you are looking for something firming, the Replenix Smooth + Tighten Lotion is a much better choice.

It’s light and fast to absorb, so it’s ideal for oily or normal skin. Pick it up at Sephora!

Key Features

  • Size: 16 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Fragrance, macadamia oil, glycerin, olive oil
  • Fragrance: Floral and citrus
  • Cruelty-Free: No

Pros

  • Gorgeous scent
  • Light, fast-penetrating texture
  • Hydrating and nourishing

Cons

  • Not actually firming
13
Best for Men
Jack Black Cool Moisture Body Lotion
Jack Black Nordstrom.com
$30

If you’re trying to get one of the guys in your life to moisturize more, Jack Black offers a fantastic body lotion. It’s a cooling body lotion with a subtle but masculine scent and a texture that won’t bug cream-averse men, so it’s really hard to go wrong with it.

Before really diving deep into how well this moisturizes, it’s important to mention that this lotion includes menthyl lactate. This menthol compound has a cooling effect on the skin that’s quite nice post-exercise or after a long day of physical work, but it may be irritating for some with sensitive skin.

As a moisturizer, it’s very comprehensive, with both hydrating agents like soy protein and glycerin, and moisture-binding silicones and oils. The silicones also provide a non-greasy texture, which is important for most men.

While we recommend it for men, the scent is actually subtle enough that some women like to use it, as well! Get it at Nordstrom, or Sephora!

Key Features

  • Size: 16 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Macadamia oil, silicone, glycerin, vitamin E, soy protein
  • Fragrance: Clean and subtle
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Subtle, masculine scent
  • Pleasant cooling effect
  • Light, non-greasy texture
  • Thorough moisturization

Cons

  • Menthyl lactate can be irritating for some
14
Best Natural Formula
Alba Botanica Very Emollient Body Lotion
Alba Botanica Amazon.com
$12

This rich and creamy body lotion from Alba Botanica has a lot going for it! It’s fragrance-free, which is quite unusual for natural formulas, and it’s also quite rich, making it one of the few body lotions that work as well as creams for those with dry skin.

The ingredients here are classic moisturizers, like glycerin for hydration and sesame and safflower oil for softening the skin and keeping moisture in place. There’s a touch of dimethicone, which boosts up the ability of this lotion to protect the skin, although, it does slightly compromise its all-natural cred. However, if you want a truly reparative option that’ll work for sensitive skin and don’t mind a tiny amount of well-placed synthetics, we think that’s perfectly fine.

Finally, it’s also incredibly budget-friendly, thanks to the large size of the bottle. It’s a great choice for the entire family! Buy it from Amazon!

Key Features

  • Size: 32 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Glycerin, safflower oil, shea butter, chamomile extract
  • Fragrance: Fragrance-free
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Rich and reparative
  • Great for very dry skin
  • Works for sensitive skin
  • Very budget-friendly

Cons

  • Contains a bit of silicone
15
Best Fruity Scent
Hempz Fresh Coconut & Watermelon Moisturizing Skin Lotion
Hempz Amazon.com
$11.95

If you love a fruity fragrance, you might be tempted to eat up this lovely lotion from Hempz! This brand is known for two things: having wonderfully scented products and for using hemp oil in pretty much everything. That’s definitely true for this lotion.

Despite the very natural and botanical branding, however, it’s important to mention that Hempz products aren’t really all that natural. This lotion does contain a lot of natural ingredients, like shea butter and hemp oil, but it also includes synthetic humectants and silicones.

The formula is extremely light and fluid, so it’s quick to absorb into the skin. It offers more hydration than moisture-binding effects, so we think it’s a better choice for summer. The other detail that makes it summer-perfect is the tropical coconut and watermelon scent that fits the hot season perfectly. Order it from Amazon!

Key Features

  • Size: 17 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Shea butter, hemp seed oil, silicone
  • Fragrance: Coconut and watermelon
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Light and hydrating
  • Gorgeous tropical scent
  • Perfect for summer

Cons

  • Not as natural as branding suggests
16
Best Korean
Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Body Lotion
Dr. Jart+ Sephora.com
$25

We don’t often consider Korean products for our body care, which is quite unfortunate! Our favorite K-beauty brands can do just as great a job at making skincare for the body as they do for the face.

With this body lotion, Dr. Jart+ really offers the best of K-beauty, with an evidence-based formula that has a stunning texture. This body lotion is ceramide-based, as you can tell from the name. The ceramides show up near the front of the ingredient list, along with ingredients that support their barrier-restoring action, like cholesterol and fatty acids.

The formula is light, and yet it has long-lasting skin-softening effects. It may not be enough on its own for dry skin, but for normal or oily skin, it’s a lovely choice! Find it at Sephora!

Key Features

  • Size: 6.76 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: Ceramides, hyaluronic acid,
  • Fragrance: Herbal
  • Cruelty-Free: No

Pros

  • Barrier-restoring formula
  • Light texture
  • Long-term softening effects

Cons

  • Not enough for dry skin
17
Best with SPF
Supergoop! PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50 PA++++
Supergoop! Nordstrom.com
$32

There are certain times a year when our body needs sun protection more than just about anything else. Instead of trying to layer both moisturizer and sunscreen, it’s best to opt for a body lotion with SPF to do both!

This water-resistant formula from Supergoop! is a great choice. It’s not easy to find a body sunscreen that really stays put, offers high protection, and moisturizes but without feeling heavy. Instead, this light lotion formula is easy to rub into the skin!

It contains a respectable amount of glycerin, which is essential for keeping the skin hydrated but does seem to leave behind a bit of a sheen. For us, it’s a small price to pay for such a comprehensive formula. You can find it at Sephora, and Nordstrom.

Key Features

  • Size: 2.4-18 Oz.
  • Key Ingredients: SPF filters, glycerin, sunflower extract
  • Fragrance: Citrus
  • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Pros

  • Two-in-one sun protection and moisturization
  • Very hydrating
  • Easy to spread
  • Water-resistant

Cons

  • Leaves the skin a little shiny

How We Selected the Best Body Lotions?

When compiling our list of the best body lotions, these are the key factors we looked for!

Hydration

The most essential function of a body lotion is to hydrate, meaning that it can saturate the skin with water. Body lotions usually do this incredibly well because they’re made with a lot of water (much more than the average body cream) as well as humectants, which are ingredients like glycerin that actually hold and attract water. To us, it’s pretty simple – if a body lotion isn’t hydrating, then it’s totally pointless!

Light Texture

The chief feature of a body lotion is that it’s so light. Body lotions should be very quick to sink into the skin without leaving an oily film behind. When selecting the body lotions for our list, this texture was one of the main factors we considered, although we did include a couple of richer options that are a touch heavier than the average lotion.

A lot of the lotions we selected offer both a light texture and adequate moisturization because they include silicones, which have a silky skin feel, however, if you’re looking for a light texture but silicone-free formula, have a look at Drunk Elephant’s Sili lotion.

@___m__e__l

Moisture-Locking Effects

The second aspect of moisturization is moisture-binding effects. Normally, the sebum or natural oil that our skin produces helps to keep moisture inside our skin. However, when our skin gets dry and fails to produce enough sebum, all of that moisture starts to evaporate.

That’s why a great body lotion will also include some ingredients that create a protective, moisture-sealing layer over the skin. These ingredients are called occlusives. Almost all oils have some occlusive properties, but the best occlusion comes from shea butter, silicones like dimethicone, and mineral oil or petrolatum.

All of the body lotions on our list offer at least a bit of occlusion, but generally, creams and body butters are more occlusive. If you have severe dryness, a body lotion might not be enough. With that said, some of the body lotions on our list are almost as occlusive as a cream, like the Eucerin Intensive Repair Lotion.

What to Look for in the Best Body Lotion for You?

Aside from the basic features, here are some considerations you should have when choosing the best body lotion for your skin’s unique needs.

Oily Skin

Those with oily skin tend to benefit the most from body lotions. They offer just the right level of moisture to your skin, and they never make you feel oilier! Look for light body lotions with a thin texture. Dimethicone on the ingredient list is usually a good sign that the formula will have a silky, slightly more matte finish that’ll feel almost like a primer on your skin.

Normal Skin

Those with normal skin often enjoy body lotions in the summer, when the air is more humid, so they need a lighter level of moisturization. If you do have normal skin, chances are that any body lotion will work for you, so you have a bit more freedom to experiment.

Dry Skin

Those with dry skin are not the primary candidates for body lotions since their skin usually needs a heavier cream or butter. However, there are some exceptions. Some body lotions, like Alba Botanica and Eucerin, are a little richer than normal, so they can offer enough moisturization even for very dry skin.

A lighter, humectant-based body lotion can also be nice for layering, just like a serum for the face. If you want to really treat your skin, apply a body lotion first for hydration, and then layer a more occlusive body butter or cream on top to lock everything in.

@roti.brown

Acne-Prone Skin

While acne is most common on the face, some people can also experience it on their body – especially on the back or chest. If you do have acne-prone skin, your body lotion can actually help you treat it! A lotion with salicylic acid like CeraVe SA is usually the best choice since this exfoliating acid is known for helping with breakouts, but any exfoliating body lotion can help.

If you just want simple moisturization, look for a light body lotion that’s free from potentially comedogenic oils, like the CeraVe Daily Lotion.

Sensitive Skin

Those with sensitive skin can rely on their body lotion to help restore their skin barrier and soothe irritation. The key thing, however, is to avoid fragrances, which are often likely to irritate sensitive skin. Other than that, look for barrier-restoring ingredients like ceramides or plant oils, as well as soothing agents like CBD, chamomile, or niacinamide.

Maturing Skin

Age affects more than just the face! It can also lead to loss of tone and wrinkles on our bodies. By keeping the skin soft and supple, body lotions can help keep the skin looking a little youthful for longer. Body lotions with SPF are important when the body is exposed to the sun since UVA rays are known for causing premature aging (not to mention the skin cancer risk that the sun poses).

Reversing the signs of aging requires a more intense treatment, however. Ingredients like caffeine and peptides can help to gently firm up the skin, but for dramatic results, nothing compares to retinol, which is why we included the firming Replenix lotion on our list.

Rough Skin or KP

Certain skin conditions, like keratosis pilaris, psoriasis, and eczema, can lead to a build-up of dead skin that causes texture and roughness. While a moisturizing body lotion can lightly help soften the skin, the real key is to find a body lotion that can exfoliate away that roughness.

Ingredients like glycolic acid (i.e. AHA), urea, or salicylic acid can all do a magnificent job of smoothing out the skin. Quite a few of the body lotions on our list include them, like CeraVe SA, Paula’s Choice, and Eucerin.
