Whether you have oily, dry, sensitive or acne-prone skin, you’re sure to find the best face oil for you in the selection we have created for you here.
1. Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Antioxidant Face Oil
Marula oil is an excellent anti-aging face oil for dry skin. Its main fatty acid is oleic acid, a penetration-enhancing fatty acid. It is also loaded with antioxidant tocopherols, phytosterols and flavonoids that help prevent signs of premature aging. Despite its extremely nourishing and moisturizing composition, it is actually a very light face oil that sinks in quickly and leaves the skin soft but not greasy. This Drunk Elephant oil is best for those with dry skin, while those with acne-prone or sensitive skin should take caution. Buy it at Sephora!
2. Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil
The most notable ingredient in this facial oil is seaberry oil (you may have heard of it as sea buckthorn oil). This oil comes from the fruit rather than the seed, so its main fatty acids are palmitoleic and palmitic acids, which have softening and soothing effects on the skin. It is also rich in both vitamin E and vitamin A, which boosts its anti-aging effects.
This oil is the main active ingredient, sitting in a base of dry-feeling, acne-fighting grape seed oil and the slightly richer camellia oil. It’d be the best facial oil for those with combination skin looking for anti-aging effects. Note that it does have a fragrance. It is available at Nordstrom.
3. Sunday Riley Luna Retinol Sleeping Night Oil
The oils are not the main event in this brilliantly blue facial oil. The key ingredient here is trans-retinol ester, and gentle form of vitamin A that resurfaces and regenerates the skin to improve texture, fade fine lines, and prevent breakouts. This formula also contains anti-inflammatory chamazulene rich extracts.
The oil blend itself is comprised of very diverse oils from avocado, grape seed, blackberry and chia, all of which are rich in antioxidants. It’s a great choice for those wanting radical effects or serious age prevention, but those with sensitive and acne-prone skin should definitely do a patch test. You can get it from Sephora.
4. Paula’s Choice Moisture Renewal Oil Booster
This gentle face oil blend would be best for those with skin that leans towards dry. It is perfect for softening the skin and locking moisture in, with a light blend of jojoba, apricot, sunflower oils, and more. The formula is boosted with barrier-fortifying ceramides, and would be perfect for treating dry, sensitive and dehydrated skin. Order it online from Net-a-Porter!
5. Farsáli Rose Gold Elixir – 24k Gold Infused Beauty Oil
This will be the best face oil for those who want to feel truly pampered. Its key oils are light and nourishing, with a fatty acid composition that will work for all skin types without exacerbating acne. It includes vitamin A-rich rosehip oil, soothing safflower oil, and antioxidant-rich pumpkin seed oil. The important skin care ingredients in here might be available elsewhere for less money, but don’t you want to feel fancy by also rubbing gold into your skin? Find it at Sephora!
6. La Mer The Renewal Oil
This face oil makes for a more comprehensive moisturizer than most, thanks to a unique two-phase formula. One phase is the oils, including truly emollient ones like meadowfoam seed oil, sweet almond oil, and jojoba, while the second phase is water based, including fabulous humectants like glycerin and butylene glycol. It also includes La Mer’s signature Miracle Broth, of course. It’d be ideal for those with dry and dehydrated skin. Buy it from Nordstrom!
7. Josie Maran 100 percent Pure Argan Oil
With its incredibly high vitamin E content and nearly equal amounts of oleic and linoleic acid, argan oil is by far one of the best facial oils, especially for those with dry and sensitive skin. It is soothing and moisturizing, unlikely to irritate, but very likely to penetrate into the stratum corneum and saturate it with all that protective, skin-calming goodness. You can use it alone or mixed in with your favorite moisturizer. This facial oil is available at Sephora.
8. Kopari Save Face Oil
Straight coconut oil can be a bit much for the face, especially for those with oily or acne-prone skin. It has lots of benefits, though, with the chief one being its high content of anti-inflammatory lauric acid. This formula celebrates it while also thinning it out by mixing it with beneficial but light ingredients like squalane, coconut alkanes, apple extract, and coffee leaf extract. It’s a soothing, anti-aging formula that should work for sensitive, dry and combination skin types. You can find it at Nordstrom.
9. Caudalie VineActiv Overnight Detox Oil
This face oil is light, moisturizing, and refreshing with a herbaceous scent. It is quite light, with MCT and grape seed oil as its main ingredients. A touch of almond oil and rosehip seed oil give an antioxidant boost to the formula, and a whole host of essential oils add an invigorating touch although they may not work for those with sensitive skin. Pick it up from Net-a-Porter!
10. Herbivore Lapis Balancing Facial Oil
It’s hard not to feel a little magical when dispensing this bright blue face oil from its fancy glass bottle. The color comes from blue tansy essential oil, which is rich in anti-inflammatory chamazulene. Its rose and jasmine fragrance blend is intoxicating, while its ability to lightly moisturize the skin is lovely. It is made with squalane, jojoba and MCT oils, which give it a light yet moisturizing texture. It should work for all skin types, although be careful if you’re acne-prone. Order it from Sephora!
11. Tarte Maracuja Oil
Maracuja oil is a fancy name for the already fancily named passion fruit oil. Taken from the seed of the fruit, this oil is lightweight and silky. It is comparable to grape seed oil, with lots of linoleic acid and just a touch of oleic and palmitic acids. This means that it is fabulous for oily and acne-prone skin, but it also contains some antioxidant compounds to help stave off premature aging. Since it is fragrance-free it should work for sensitive skin as well. Buy it at Ulta!
12. The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil
This orange-colored face oil is a cult-favorite through and through, and for a good reason. The price is low but the effects are significant since it is composed of CO2-extracted rosehip seed oil. This particular method preserves the incredible amounts of vitamin A that are present in this oil and gives it the ability to smooth the skin, prevent wrinkles, and protect against free radical damage. This The Ordinary facial oil is stabilized with vitamin E, but there are no other ingredients to dilute it. This oil is sold at Sephora.
13. Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil
This facial oil from Clarins is crafted with a blend of essential oils meant to have an aromatherapeutic effect. These include blue orchid and patchouli, which are lovely but may not work for those with sensitive skin. The main botanical oil here is from hazelnut, which is a more moisturizing, penetrating oil ideal for those with dry skin. It is available at Nordstrom.
14. Tata Harper Retinoic Nutrient Face Oil
Rosehip oil is the star in this anti-aging face oil blend that is meant to smooth the skin and reduce signs of extrinsic aging. It doesn’t contain retinol – just the vitamin A that naturally occurs in rosehip seeds, but it does contain a few oleic-heavy oils to ensure good penetration and moisturization. It also contains a collection of plant extracts and essential oils that give additional antioxidant protection but might irritate sensitive skin. You can order it from Net-a-Porter.
15. Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil
This pink little face oil is gorgeous and versatile. Beyond that, it’s one of the few facial oils that will work for those with fungal skin conditions! It is made with squalane, a super stable moisturizing hydrocarbon with a light, very slightly oily texture. It also contains vitamin C, a wonderful skin-brightening and anti-aging ingredient, and mastic resin, which has antimicrobial properties. A touch of rose extract gives it a magnificent scent and skin-refreshing properties. Pick it up at Sephora!
16. Youth To The People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Oil
This super antioxidant face oil would be an excellent addition to anti-aging beauty routine. Its base is of lighter oils like sunflower or jojoba, reinforced with the addition of super antioxidant oils from maqui, acai, and goji. This gentle formula is unlikely to cause breakouts and will work wonderfully for all skin types. You’ll find it at Sephora.
17. Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Face Oil
This super light face oil is actually heavy on the MCT base – a non-comedogenic derivative of coconut oil that has the silkiest, lightest texture imaginable. That’s what gives it this super unique texture that is fabulous for those with oily skin as long as they’re not acne-prone. It contains all kind of antioxidant-rich phytonutrients including camellia oil, chia seed oil, and rice bran extract. It is sold at Nordstrom.
18. Go-To Face Hero
This lovely facial oil is a new addition at Sephora. It is very quick to penetrate into the skin, loading it up with a whole range of beneficial oils. Buriti oil is the exotic hero ingredient, an oil that has significant anti-inflammatory properties, which are excellent for easily irritated skin. The base is a richer one with lots of oleic acid, so it’ll work better for dry skin. These oils include sweet almond oil and jojoba oil. To give the skin an extra calming touch, there is also calendula oil included. You can purchase it from Sephora.
19. Strivectin S.T.A.R. Light Retinol Night Oil
This is actually a hardcore anti-aging treatment packaged in the form of a facial oil. It contains retinol, a very effective form of vitamin A that helps resurface the skin to smooth it and fade fine lines. It is quite gentle in this formula, as it is blended with gentle MCT oil, squalane, as well as a few balanced botanical oils. The formula contains other anti-aging superstars like vitamin C and bakuchiol. It should work for all skin types to fight signs of photoaging. Find it at Ulta!
20. Kiehl’s Since 1851 Midnight Recovery Concentrate
This popular face oil has been around for a while, and is considered one of the best facial oils by many adoring fans. Its texture is truly incredible and light, since it is made primarily with MCT oil, squalane, and rosehip oil. It is ideal for nighttime because of the lavender-heavy fragrance blend, which helps soothe the mind to help you fall asleep. However, the fragrance also means that those with sensitive skin might find it irritating. It is available at Sephora.
21. Milk Makeup Sunshine Oil
This super light face oil is a fun product, that’s for sure. The main oils in it are from grape seeds and avocado, so it’ll be fine for oily and acne-prone skin. This fragrant oil blend comes in a roller ball, for easy application. The fragrance blend is fresh and citrusy, but it may be sensitizing for some people. Since it does contain lemon peel oil, be careful to use it in conjunction with a good dose of sunscreen. Order it online from Sephora!
22. Lancer Skincare Omega Hydrating Oil
If your skin is badly dehydrated or compromised, then this is the facial oil to try. It is made with a 10% ferment extract that will help restore the skin’s barrier functions and improve hydration. Of course, as with any facial oil, it also contains plenty of nutritious botanical oils including grape seed, jojoba, olive, and sunflower oils. Check it out at Dermstore!
23. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Oat & Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil
With ingredients like cannabis sativa oil (just the fancy new name for hemp oil) and colloidal oatmeal, you can tell that this would be one of the best facial oils for those with sensitive, compromised skin. It’s a destressing face oil in a base of nourishing jojoba, hemp, borage, and more. It would be ideal for those with normal and dry skin, but may also work for oilier skin types. It is sold at Sephora.
24. Omorovicza Miracle Facial Oil
Because of the dominance of heavier, oleic acid-rich oils in this blend, it’d be best for those with dry skin, and likely won’t work for anyone oily or acne-prone. This face oil also has significant anti-aging benefits from antioxidant-rich oils like sea buckthorn fruit oil and rosehip oil, as well as from skin-restoring algae and smoothing bakuchiol. Pick it up from Nordstrom!
25. Indie Lee Squalane Facial Oil
Pure squalane is a phenomenal facial oil for all skin types, although we’ll admit that whether it’s technically an oil is debatable. It’s a very simple hydrocarbon that smoothes and strengthens the skin without irritating it or clogging pores. The other big benefit is that it’s fungal-safe. It has a silky, non-greasy texture that sinks into the skin very quickly. You can get it at Sephora.
26. Kate Somerville Dilo Oil Restorative Treatment
This rich facial oil is made for mature, stressed, and dry skin. It contains a robust combination of macadamia, coconut, and pumpkin oil to nourish the skin and improve hydration by locking in moisture. The star ingredient, however, is Fiji Dilo oil (a.k.a. tamanu oil), a super antioxidant face oil with a very moisturizing fatty acid profile. Buy this face oil from Ulta!
27. Farmacy Honey Grail Ultra-Hydrating Face Oil
The powers of honey propolis, and botanical oils are combined to make this skin-smoothing facial oil an amazing soothing, restoring, and anti-aging treatment. Propolis is chockfull of antioxidants that prevent free radical damage and also has a humectant effect to pull water into the skin. Sea buckthorn oil boosts the vitamin content in this oil even more, and coconut oil gives gentle, soothing nourishment to the skin. This oil can work for all skin types, but patch test it if you’re acne-prone. It is available at Sephora.
What to Look for in the Best Face Oils for You?
The face oils you decide to choose and avoid will totally depend on your skin type, allergies, your reasons for using a face oil, and how you plan to use it.
- For example, if you have sensitive skin, you should avoid face oils that contain a lot of fragrance or essential oils, and you might want to avoid or at least thoroughly patch test face oils high in oleic acid as well.
- If you have or have had some sort of fungal skin infections, you want to avoid almost all botanical face oils, and instead choose more stabilized versions of them or oils derived from non-botanical sources.
- If you have acne-prone skin, you will likely want to avoid oils high in oleic acid a.k.a. omega-9, as well as butters rich in stearic and palmitic acids. You will always want to patch test a new oil for at least a few days before applying it all over your face since even oils that are usually acne-safe may break you out.
- If you have oily skin, then heavy oils will not feel nice on your skin, and they will make you look overly shiny. You will want to skip any facial oils with a thicker texture or that take longer to sink into the skin, especially in the daytime.
