Our Picks for the Best Natural Deodorants
These are the best natural deodorants in roll-up, roll-on, cream, and even liquid formats!
You’ve probably already heard of Native advertised by your favorite podcast. It’s one of the best deodorants, and it really feels as elegant as any mainstream one. It has a traditional roll-up bar format, so it’s simple and convenient to use. The formula is creamy but made with ozokerite and starch, which absorb sweat. It comes in a wide range of gorgeous scents, but we’re in love with the combo of coconut and vanilla. Order it from Amazon!
This deodorant is another great roll-up to try, especially if you need something stronger. It’s made with baking soda, which is fantastic for inhibiting odor, although it can be irritating for some. It contains some moisture-absorbing ingredients, as well, like tapioca starch and kaolin clay. The essential oils used for fragrance are also known for targeting odor-causing microbes, like peppermint, eucalyptus, and grapefruit. You can buy it from Dermstore.
Drunk Elephant joined the game with their own super cool take on natural deodorant. This formula works on the principle that keeping the skin of the armpit at a low pH is the best way to prevent bacteria from forming. It’s made with mandelic acid, which also helps keep the skin soft and supple, and includes arrowroot powder, which absorbs sweat so you can feel nice and dry. It comes as a cream in an innovative dispenser that allows you to smooth it on without getting your hands dirty. Get it at Sephora!
This simple organic deodorant cream is a sweet little product. Like other options on this list, it’s made with arrowroot and baking soda, which are pretty signature ingredients in natural deodorants. It also includes calendula, which has a soothing effect on the skin, and the fragrance is from the ylang-ylang flower. It comes in a jar, so you do have to rub it on with your fingers. Find it on Amazon!
This roll-up deodorant is nice and creamy, with a blend of excellent smell-fighters. It includes baking soda, arrowroot, and multiple odor-absorbing minerals. The scent comes from antimicrobial essential oils like tea tree, grapefruit, and lavender. A touch of coconut oil helps keep the skin moisturized. This deodorant is also marketed with the claim that it slows hair growth, which we find very suspect. Despite that, it’s still a lovely natural deodorant that works well. Pick it up at Ulta!
This roll-on deodorant is cooling and refreshing to use, and it’s made based on the principle that a low-pH environment is not a home to bacteria that cause bad smells. It’s made with a few different AHAs, including mandelic and lactic acid, as well as hydrating aloe, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin. The most surprising addition to the formula is a collection of peptides, which we usually think of as anti-aging agents… well, to wrinkle-free pits, then! This deodorant is available at Revolve.
This is the most luxurious organic deodorant you can imagine. It’s made with rose and sandalwood essential oils, which pair together beautifully, giving off an intoxicating scent. The rest of the formula is simple but refined, with skin-nourishing oils, and both baking soda and honey to fight odor. Shop for it on Amazon!
Coconut lovers rejoice! The brand known for the most luxurious coconut products has also released one of the best natural deodorants to try. In addition to coconut oil and water, the formula also includes probiotics that are said to help neutralize the bad bacteria under the arms. It’s a great baking soda-free choice. Purchase it from Sephora!
This deodorant cream is free of baking soda, so it’s another fantastic option for sensitive skin. It seems like refreshing grapefruit and includes magnesium hydroxide to eliminate odors and arrowroot powder to absorb moisture. It’s a creamy and moisturizing option that will truly nourish your underarms. You can grab it on Amazon.
This is the best natural deodorant in spray form to try. Unlike all of the cream options, it’s much lighter and quicker to dissipate, and yet it still works wonderfully. The real secret here is alcohol, which quickly forces sweat and moisture to evaporate, although sage and tea tree oils are also important because they give off a great herbal scent while inhibiting smelly microbes. Grab it from Dermstore!
When it comes to packaging, Megababe has one of our favorite aesthetics, so it’s nice that their products are so effective as well. This lovely stick deodorant relies on the power of sage and cornstarch to keep away bad smells. There’s also a touch of rose in the blend, which gives a romantic twist to the scent, and green tea, which soothes the skin. Buy it from Ulta!
This natural deodorant is a lavender dream. It gives one of the most long-holding effects out of any natural deodorants we’ve seen, thanks to zinc, silica, and cornstarch. The essential oils also work extra hard to keep odor-causing microbes from forming. Order it online from Amazon!
If you can’t get enough of eucalyptus, this is the natural deodorant for you! The eucalyptus scent is predominant here and does an amazing job of controlling smells. Otherwise, the formula is mild and gentle, without any heavy ingredients that can clog pores or irritate the skin. You can get it at Nordstrom.
This lovely roll-on substitutes the baking soda with charcoal, starch, and tea tree oil, so it keeps the armpits feeling fresh all day long. It also includes coconut oil and beeswax, which moisturize nicely and bergamot and lavender, which give an herbal-citrus scent. Find it at Follain!
This rosy deodorant isn’t exactly all-natural, but it is a wonderful, aluminum-free option for those on a budget. It looks and feels like a traditional deodorant, with a gorgeous rose scent. It comes in a pack of three, so one purchase will last for months. Pick it up from Amazon!
This natural deodorant has an interesting formula with astringent effects. In addition to common ingredients like tea tree and eucalyptus oil, it also includes witch hazel, which has a soothing and astringent effect. Tapioca starch is included for sweat absorption. It’s available at Sephora.
If you like to smell sweet and tasty, we think you’ll love the vanilla and grapefruit scent combo of this delectable deodorant. It’s a baking soda-free natural deodorant that contains corn starch, silica, and probiotics to counter odors instead. It holds up well despite not containing baking soda, so you can make it your choice for sweaty days. Shop for it on Amazon!
Jasmine is one of our favorite summer fragrances, so of course, we got excited about this organic deodorant! It’s a simple twist-up with a strong effect. It’s made with magnesium oxide, which has strong odor-controlling effects but is very gentle on the skin. The main oil in the blend is sweet almond oil, which is wonderfully moisturizing but not as heavy as coconut oil. You can purchase it on Amazon.
This smooth cream deodorant has a silky texture, so it’s a nice choice if you find other natural deodorants to be too oily for your skin. The base is light, but it still includes the same ingredients we’ve come to understand are most effective for smell reduction, like baking soda, arrowroot powder, and a blend of citrus essential oils. The other nice thing about it is that the packaging breaks the mold and looks modern and clean. It’s sold at Follain.
This super gentle natural deodorant isn’t the strongest on our list, but it’s extremely lovely. It’s made with a ton of skin-loving ingredients that soothe and nourish the skin, including moringa and papaya. The scent control comes from silica, kaolin, and a lot of different essential oils, so you’ll be happy to reapply throughout the day. It’s sold at Sephora.
This is the best natural deodorant that combines the bacteria-inhibiting effects of alpha-hydroxy acids with the moisture-absorbing effects of starch and clay, making for a formula that keeps the armpits clean, fresh, and bright. It has a unique cream-bar hybrid texture that glides on the skin easily. Eucalyptus is the predominant scent in the formula, but it’s softened by the addition of ginger, citrus, and lavender, so it could work for all genders. Buy it at Sephora!
This is another nice budget natural deodorant from the staple brand Arm & Hammer. It’s a real no-frills deodorant made with the scent of rosemary and lavender. Baking soda is the main odor-controlling ingredient in here, but the strong essential oils also help. It’s a simple roll-up bar that you’ll feel totally comfortable with. It’s available on Amazon.
It’s rare to find a good natural deodorant that doesn’t have a scent, but this one really delivers. If you have fragrance allergies or sensitive skin, it’ll keep you feeling good while still preventing sweat from peeking through. It’s made with hops extract, which is the ingredient that works to inhibit scent. It’s not the strongest we’ve seen, but it’s definitely one of the gentlest. Order it from Amazon!
Don’t be fooled by the pretty packaging! This is one of the best natural deodorants for odor control. It’s made with zinc and baking soda, which make for a powerful combination. It has the sweet floral scent of honeysuckle, which is a classic choice for spring. Get it on Amazon!
We love it when an organic deodorant can have such playful packaging! It’s the kind of product you could easily get your whole family to try. It’s a simple bar with a coconut and beeswax base that is able to keep you feeling fresh thanks to the trifecta of zinc, baking soda, and charcoal. It smells like vanilla and mint, which is delicious yet unisex. Find it through Amazon!
There’s something about the cool touch of a roll-on ball deodorant first thing in the morning that wakes you right up. This water-based formula is pretty intense at odor control, with alcohol, zinc, and bentonite keeping sweat from gathering under the arms. The fragrance is balanced, with sweet rose countered by the sharper sage and geranium scents. Pick it up from Dermstore!
You can expect a brand that makes exercise wear to also understand how to make a natural deodorant that really works. This anti-stink spray deodorant counters bad bacteria with good prebiotics and helps reduce sweat with zinc. The aloe-lotus scent is nice and mild, so it won’t fight against your perfume or stand out too much. It’s sold at Lululemon.
This is a super-soothing natural deodorant option with a cream-gel roll-on formula. It’s very cooling, with anti-inflammatory ingredients like calendula, aloe, oat protein, and allantoin. It offers light odor control thanks to witch hazel and a natural fragrance, but it won’t hold up against intense sweat. Shop for it on Amazon!
Made with athletes in mind, this natural deodorant is definitely a stronger choice. It contains both arrowroot and baking soda, so it’s good both for odor control and to keep the skin dry. Grapefruit and coriander come together for a very unique yet fresh scent. Purchase it from Amazon!
This is another fragrance-free deodorant that’s worth trying if your skin can’t handle essential oils. It contains baking soda, corn starch, and probiotics, so it’s still extremely effective. The base is coconut oil, so it’s very nourishing to the skin, although it might be too heavy for some. It’s available at Nordstrom.
This classic Biossance formula is like a moisturizer for the underarm. It contains squalane, which is this brand’s signature emollient ingredient. It’s free of baking soda, so it’s not the strongest odor-controlling option, but it works well on calmer days. Grapefruit, geranium, and clary sage offer a neutral but fresh fragrance. Find it at Amazon!
What to Look for in the Perfect Natural Deodorant?
We have some tips that will help you select your first natural deodorant.
Consider the Format
Organic deodorants come in a variety of formats, from ones that are more similar to traditional options to truly unique creams or sprays.
Sticks are the most common, and they’re just as lovely as mainstream counterparts. They’re usually made out of oils, wax, and some odor-blocking ingredients, so it might take a few seconds of rubbing to get them to dispense the product. They moisturize the armpits while also blocking odors.
Creams used to be the standard option when it came to organic deodorants. They usually come in a jar, so you just use your fingers to rub some into your underarm area. They are usually made in a very similar way to sticks, with the same lovely oils, and they also take up less space, so they’re easy to travel with.
Liquid Roll-On or Spray
Liquid organic deodorants are also becoming more common. They either come as sprays or in tubes with roll-on balls. They are usually made with a water and alcohol base with a lot of essential oils.
Alcohol is great for killing odor-causing bacteria, and it also helps sweat evaporate quickly, but it can sting if applied to broken skin. They’re worth a try if you haven’t had success with other formats.
Choose a Scent You’ll Love
Whether you prefer floral, herbal, citrus, or earthy scents, there’s a natural deodorant out there that you will love! Instead of giving vague names like “clean scent” or “ocean,” natural deodorants usually list the full list of essential oils, so you can tell exactly how the product will smell.
Some scents, like anything that involves eucalyptus, tea tree oil, or rosemary, are going to be more unisex, citrus scents from bergamot, grapefruit, or orange peel are very bright and refreshing, lavender has its own unique, iconic scent, and rose is the most romantic and feminine of all.
Avoid Personal Irritants
Whether you have sensitive skin or not, there might be some natural deodorant ingredients that irritate your skin. For many, it’s baking soda, which is why we added so many baking soda-free options to our list, while for others, it’s actually the essential oils, which is why we also included some totally fragrance-free options. Always read the ingredient lists, and avoid anything you know your skin doesn’t tolerate well.
If at First You Don’t Succeed…
Some natural wellness experts explain that the natural deodorant that’ll work well for one person may not work for another one. Finding the right one for you may take some trial and error. If you’re committed to making the switch, keep trying new formulas until you find the one that works for you!
Natural Deodorant FAQ
If you have any more questions or doubts about aluminum-free deodorants, we answer them below!
A natural deodorant is any formula that is largely made of plant-based ingredients that helps to keep your armpits smelling good, even if you get sweaty! Natural deodorants can come as roll-up bars, liquids, creams, and more, and different formulas will rely on different ingredients to eliminate bad smells and to absorb sweat.
One of the most common ingredients is baking soda, which many people find helps to suppress bad odors in all kinds of contents. Unfortunately, baking soda has a very high pH and can be irritating for some, so there are also brands that choose to avoid it.
Usually, that’s followed by some sort of starch, including tapioca starch, corn starch, or arrowroot powder. The job of the starch is to absorb sweat to keep the underarms from getting too moist throughout the day. Some brands boost the starch with other absorbent ingredients like silica, ozokerite, or kaolin clay.
Then there are other antimicrobial agents that are used to suppress the odor-causing bacteria. Antimicrobial essential oils from eucalyptus, lavender, citrus fruits, and many other plants are very popular because, in addition to being mild antimicrobials, they also help to mask bad odors and to give a beautiful scent to the deodorant.
Finally, we’re starting to see a few brands introduce natural deodorants with low-pH formulas or skincare acids that help to reduce the pH of the skin. The microbes that cause bad smells can’t survive in a low-pH environment, which is how these acids are able to keep the underarm smelling fresh. This is a great alternative to baking soda because it also brings the skin to a healthier pH level.
Natural deodorants have their positives and negatives, so decide for yourself if they’re right for you.
– Natural deodorants inhibit odor with natural ingredients
– They don’t block the sweat glands
– Absolutely zero major health concerns from natural ingredients
– Really lovely fragrances
– Formulas often contain plant oils that nourish the skin
– Not as strong as an antiperspirant
– More likely to contain essential oils that can be irritating for some
– You may experience a 2-week “detox period” before natural deodorant starts blocking bad odors
When it comes to women’s care products, most of the deodorants we see in the stores and supermarkets are actually antiperspirants. Antiperspirants actually prevent sweating by blocking the sweat glands, so they are strong, and they prevent both moisture and odor from showing up in the armpit.
The active ingredient in most antiperspirants is aluminum chlorohydrate, and there is some concern that it might collect in the body and lead to breast cancer or Alzheimer’s. This connection, however, is tenuous. Research hasn’t even come close to proving cause and effect, so in general, we’re not convinced to throw away our antiperspirant.
The one health risk that does correlate a touch more strongly with antiperspirant use is kidney disease. Antiperspirants won’t cause kidney disease in a healthy person, but someone who already has stage 4 or 5 kidney disease should avoid them.
However, there are still some solid reasons to switch from antiperspirant to natural deodorant! To start, sweating is not bad for us. In fact, it’s one of the ways our body detoxifies, and it also helps to cool us down. If you don’t want to mess with your body’s process, a natural deodorant will keep you smelling fresh while still allowing you to sweat naturally.
Additionally, once mixed with your sweat, an antiperspirant can bleach your clothes… right at the armpit. This doesn’t happen to everyone, but if it’s been an issue for you, then you’ll definitely want to switch to a natural deodorant. Finally, some people find antiperspirants more irritating than deodorants, and you definitely don’t want to use something that irritates your skin.
However, it’s important to know that many people note a 2-week period before their body gets used to a natural deodorant (or perhaps detoxifies from aluminum-based antiperspirant). For the first while, a bit of odor can still seep through until the body eventually reduces its production of sweat. We have a major tip further on that’ll help you get through that dreaded period.
We’ve come a long way from the days when your only natural deodorant option was a cream that you had to apply many days in a row until it worked. Nowadays, using an organic deodorant is a lot like using any mainstream deodorant you can buy at the drugstore.
You simply rub some of your natural deodorant under your arms, ideally post-shower, when your pits are nice and clean. Since many natural deodorants are made with an oil base, you might want to give it a few moments to warm up against your skin and make sure to wipe well enough to cover every millimeter of underarm skin.
However, there is a dreaded transitional period that many experience when first switching from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant. For the first two weeks or so, the natural deodorant doesn’t do a great job, but eventually, the body gets used to it, and it starts controlling odor just fine.
This doesn’t happen to everyone, but if you’re worried about experiencing this, you can give your armpits a deep-cleaning facial with your favorite clay-based mask. This is meant to reset the condition of your armpits and ensure that the natural deodorant works just fine.
