Gntl Rethinks Sustainability With New, Versatile Skin Wash

Sustainability should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Although beauty products can be fun to discover, the ugly truth is plastic bottles end up in landfills instead of being recycled for reuse.

Gntl is a multi-use skincare line that hopes to reduce waste by bringing body care back to the basics by reimagining how we complete our everyday hygiene tasks. Founded by beauty industry veteran Sydney Dake, Gntl introduces modern beauty rituals through a fresh, sustainable lens.

We spoke to Dake about launching the brand’s new Skin Wash, designed to function as up to seven different products, including face wash, body wash, makeup remover, shaving cream, hand soap, bubble bath, and any other type of skin cleansing. We were impressed to learn that reducing clutter was the biggest inspiration behind the 7-in-1 product.

“We wanted to minimize clutter and packaging waste by combining a few of those products into one multi-use, facial-grade formula that everyone in a household can share,” Dake said. “Gntl encourages people to look at their routines differently. Use what you already have and repurpose the items you may already have in your home.”

With spring just a few weeks away, it’s time to simplify our skincare and body care routines. Ahead, learn more about the inspiration behind the body wash and formula, and find out what makes it sustainable.

The inspiration behind the body wash

After working in the beauty industry as a product developer for six years and witnessing first-hand how wasteful the beauty industry can be, Dake decided to go on a mission to help end this wastefulness.

With the rise in “hyper-specialized” products, she also set her sights on reducing excessive product innovations with a simple and universal product for all. She explained, “I wanted to create a new category in beauty, not facial skincare, not body care, but skincare for everywhere, that would nourish all skin, head to toe.”

The formula behind the skin wash

The skin wash can be used as a makeup remover, face wash, body wash, hand soap, shaving gel, feminine wash, bubble bath, and more. “It’s a non-stripping gel-to-foam cleanser with gentle surfactants, hydrating humectants, and a light natural fragrance,” Dake said.

The formula, developed to EU clean standards, features baby-safe surfactants and preservatives and a clean fragrance that boasts notes of orange blossom, vanilla, honey, sandalwood, and tobacco blossom. It also includes soothing ingredients like glycerin and aloe to hydrate and comfort the skin.

The formula is free of parabens, dyes, phthalates, and sulfates to ensure the wash is safe for all skin types. It’s also cruelty-free, vegan, tested on all skin types, and dermatologist-approved.

The sustainability aspect

Gntl encourages customers to reuse rather than dispose of and question the items already in their possession. Fewer products mean less waste, which paints a more sustainable vision of the future.

“Our sustainability approach touches on all three waste management Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle,” Dake told us about the brand’s stance against creating new bottles. Sold in a large 32-ounce carbon-negative, biobased pouch, the brand encourages consumers to use a vessel they already own to lessen their plastic footprint. Once you’re done with the polymer pouch — made with bio-based, mono-material — rinse it thoroughly with warm water before recycling via No. 4 or soft plastic streams.

“By launching with a refill pouch alone and asking people to refill what they already have, we hope to continue the conversation about how we can approach sustainability in more creative ways,” Dake said.

Don’t let your money go down the drain

The goal of this new launch, according to Dake, is to change people’s perceptions of how few products are necessary to complete your hygiene and beauty routines. “I hope Gntl’s philosophy, ‘all you need is less,’ encourages people to minimize their product footprint and give new life to existing items in their households,” she said.
