Adidas’ legacy includes some of the most versatile and stylish sneakers for women on the market, with certain pairs having literally been on the crest of a wave for almost a century now. Below, we introduce the most iconic Adidas sneakers for women that have never ceased to appeal to real sneakerheads from around the world.
The History of Adidas
Registered as Adidas in 1949, Adidas’ history is a long and troubled one, as it is also coincidentally intertwined with that of another iconic footwear label – Puma. In the very beginning, in fact, the footwear label was the property of the Dassler brothers, Adolf and Rudolf, with Adolf “Adi” Dassler being the one who began producing sports shoes in his mother’s wash kitchen in the Twenties.
Fast forward to the Thirties, visionary Adi Dassler drove all the way to the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin, with a bag full of sneakers for the renowned athlete Jesse Owens to wear during the games. As a result, the Dasslers were soon overwhelmed with demands from people from all over the world who wanted to sport Owens’ trainers, too.
The brothers’ sneakers idyll, however, abruptly stopped during World War II, after a bomb attack in 1943. Ironically, as many may not know, the idyll stopped not because of the war, but due to a misunderstanding between the brothers.
While hiding from the bomb attack in Rudolf’s shelter, Adi referred to those who were attacking, namely the allies, with a derogatory remark, which Rudolf thought was referred to him and his family. The brothers never managed to overcome their contrasting emotions after that episode, splitting up in 1947 and forming two separate firms afterwards, Puma and Adidas.
As with the sneakers, Adidas’ history is thus quite iconic and one-of-a-kind too, also in terms of its signature 3-stripe logo. Adi Dassler bought the logo for two bottles of whisky and some money from another footwear brand back in 1952, which is something that makes Adidas’ past even more glorious.
The history of the iconic Adidas sneakers then officially began two years afterwards, during the 1954 World Final Cup, when the footwear label debuted a pair of sneakers that made basically everyone watching the final run amok.
Best Women’s Adidas Sneakers
Although many associate Adidas with men’s sneakers, its women’s section is actually one of the most diverse and celebrated in the industry, as it includes some of the best women’s sneakers of all time, as well as a dream array of unisex designs that are literally to die for.
To sum all of the different styles up, we could fairly state that 7 are the most appealing Adidas sneakers for women designed so far, and we really recommend checking them out to add some of the world’s best must-have trainers for women to your shoe rack.
1. Adidas Stan Smith
Of course, we had to start off our list with the iconic Adidas Stan Smith shoes, which are one of the most sold out pairs of sneakers of all time. Introduced in the industry in 1965, the Adidas Stan Smith actually debuted as the Robert Haillet, as they were named after the famous French athlete.
Renamed as “Stan Smith” in the Eighties, this pair of shoes is unisex and often revisited through various colorful lenses (Pharell Williams’ Stan Smith shoes are the most remarkable, for sure), though its classic, signature white and green version is unanimously regarded as the most iconic ever.
If you are looking for the must-have pair of Adidas sneakers for women, Stan Smith is the way to go! You can get it at Adidas here!
2. Adidas Superstar
When thinking about the best Adidas sneakers for both women and men, one cannot cut the Superstar off of the list. Spread worldwide by hip-hop group Run-DMC, the Adidas Superstar actually debuted more than forty years ago, in 1969, and is still one of the footwear label’s best-selling sneakers, and it is not that hard to understand why. One could literally wear them with everything, such as with a tracksuit à la Vetements, or a fancy dress à la Rihanna. Get your pair at Adidas!
3. Adidas Gazelle
Launched in 1966, the Adidas Gazelle is one of the most acclaimed and versatile sneakers created so far, as their elegant silhouette really makes it possible for the wearer to channel them with everything, from an elegant frock to a more casual outfit. The best part of the Adidas Gazelle is that you can collect them in a plethora of colors! Pick your favorite color from Adidas now!
4. Adidas UltraBOOST
While the previous designs are unisex, this specific pair of Adidas sneakers is solely created for women. With its dynamic silhouette, tech rubber soles and abounding variety of colors available, the Adidas UltraBOOST x Clima sneakers are the best running shoes for women, though more and more Adidas lovers are often donning them with a pair of vintage jeans on a casual day out with friends, too (and just by looking at them, it is not that hard to understand why!). 5. Adidas Iniki Runner Shoes
Like the UltraBOOST, the Adidas Iniki runner shoes are one of the label’s best-selling sneakers for women, with their pink version currently being the most acclaimed. Inspired by ‘70s runners, this pair of sneakers is also fairly new in the industry, as it officially debuted in 2016 quickly flying off the shelves as soon as it became available for purchase. Hurry up to get your favorite color from Adidas until it’s forever gone!
6. Adidas Americana
Although the allies scarred Adi Dassler a lot back in the Forties, Adidas’ owner was extremely close to and grateful for the American market, with the Americana being the pair of sneakers that celebrates his love for the USA the most.
Best known as the official sneakers of the ABA (American Basketball Association), the iconic red and blue striped sneakers are a dream come true for those who unapologetically love the Seventies, as well as for all those women who love to play with contrasts when it comes to fashion. First introduced in 1971, Americana is a vintage pair of Adidas sneakers that’s really hard to get your hands on.
7. Adidas NMD
Last but not least, our list of the best Adidas women’s sneakers had to include one of the brand’s best hybrids – the NMD sneakers. Available in various versions, with the women’s ones being the Adidas NMD_R2, the NMD is a relatively new silhouette for the label, as it combines two of the most popular technologies of Adidas – the Primeknit and the Boost, designed by Adidas’ most acclaimed designer Nic Galway.
This pair of sneakers debuted in 2015 and, needless to say, quickly became one of the best Adidas sneakers for both men and women. The women’s version features an iconic sock-like construction, cute reflective details, which are also helpful when running during the dark winter days, and a stretchy knit upper for a sleek look.
Whether you need to go out running or on a date, a pair of Adidas NMD is a win-win choice, for sure! Buy your pair at Adidas!
