The History of Adidas
Registered as Adidas in 1949, Adidas’ history is a long and troubled one, as it is also coincidentally intertwined with that of another iconic footwear label – Puma. In the very beginning, in fact, the footwear label was the property of the Dassler brothers, Adolf and Rudolf, with Adolf “Adi” Dassler being the one who began producing sports shoes in his mother’s wash kitchen in the Twenties.
Fast forward to the Thirties, visionary Adi Dassler drove all the way to the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin, with a bag full of sneakers for the renowned athlete Jesse Owens to wear during the games. As a result, the Dasslers were soon overwhelmed with demands from people from all over the world who wanted to sport Owens’ trainers, too.
The brothers’ sneakers idyll, however, abruptly stopped during World War II, after a bomb attack in 1943. Ironically, as many may not know, the idyll stopped not because of the war, but due to a misunderstanding between the brothers.
While hiding from the bomb attack in Rudolf’s shelter, Adi referred to those who were attacking, namely the allies, with a derogatory remark, which Rudolf thought was referred to him and his family. The brothers never managed to overcome their contrasting emotions after that episode, splitting up in 1947 and forming two separate firms afterwards, Puma and Adidas.
As with the sneakers, Adidas’ history is thus quite iconic and one-of-a-kind too, also in terms of its signature 3-stripe logo. Adi Dassler bought the logo for two bottles of whisky and some money from another footwear brand back in 1952, which is something that makes Adidas’ past even more glorious.
The history of the iconic Adidas sneakers then officially began two years afterwards, during the 1954 World Final Cup, when the footwear label debuted a pair of sneakers that made basically everyone watching the final run amok.
