The History of Converse Shoes

First and foremost, Converse’s success lies in its legacy, and its history is surprisingly frenetic and inspiring.

Converse began its history in 1908 as a rubber shoe company, and started its “second life” in 2003 when it became a subsidiary of Nike. Founded by Marquis Mills Converse, who began manufacturing athletic shoes in 1910, Converse hit it big seven years later, when the first Converse All-Star basketball shoes were produced.

It wasn’t, however, up until 1923 that Converse experienced its turning point, when basketball player Charles Hollis “Chuck” Taylor became Converse’s brand ambassador, after walking in Converse’s headquarters complaining of sore feet and asking executives to create a shoe especially for basketball. He successfully promoted the shoes around the U.S. and, in 1932, his now legendary signature was added to the All-Star patch on the classic, high-topped sneakers.

From the late Twenties until the end of the Second World War, Converse went through some troubled times, but managed to overcome the difficulties, ultimately regaining popularity in the late Seventies/ early Eighties.

A combination of poor financial and marketing decisions led the company to file for bankruptcy in 2001, but fortunately, Nike Inc. stepped in and saved one of the industry’s most iconic companies from disappearing for good.

How to Wear Converse Shoes Right

Although initially almost solely worn by basketball players, all of the various Converse sneakers have quickly gained popularity among non-professional athletes too, jumping from one shoe rack to the other.

Converse sneakers are almost anyone’s must-have staple, as they can be literally matched with anything. Whether you are a pop-rock queen à la Avril Lavigne in “Skater Boy”, or a bon-ton aficionado who’s often spotted in cute dresses, Converse shoes always got your back.

So, how to wear Converse shoes right? These are the tips you should always keep in mind:

• Lighter colors of Converse shoes are perfect for the summer season, while the deeper colors should be picked for winter.

High tops look amazing with dresses, skirts, jeans and pants, while you can wear your low tops with everything else.

• Petite women with short legs should never pair white Converse shoes with black or dark-colored pants, since this will make your legs appear even shorter.

• Low-cut Converse shoes have the ability to instantly elongate your legs, so consider getting them, if you are petite!

Converse Soul, Grunge Heart

The most common way to wear Converse shoes is with denim. Among all the styles of jeans, however, the skinny ones are surely the most recommended, especially if you favor high over low-top Converse trainers. To try something different, however, opt for a pair of Nineties-inspired mom jeans and a music band t-shirt, and your pair of Converse sneakers will instantly stand out!

Red Everything

Coincidentally, fiery red is also one of Converse’s warhorses when it comes to high-top Converse trainers. Since red Converse sneakers often get matched with British-inspired outfits, try to wear them with something equally classic, such as a blue pullover or a polo shirt, as they will tone the outfit down, yet keeping it fancily elegant.

Hippy Converse, Happy Hippie

Are you tired of pairing all your flared pants with the same pair of leather sandals? Try combining them with a pair of white Converse sneakers and an edgy top from Free People, and your inner hippie self will instantly rejoice!

Dress Me Up with Converse

Who says Converse sneakers are just meant for the punk rock-hearted? Any pair of Converse trainers, especially low-top ones, gives its best when paired with a cute dress, whether it is a long, hippie dress or a playful Fifties-inspired one.

Festival Season Is Converse Season!

Although we have to wait a few months for the festival season to begin, it is always a good time to get yourself a few festival-approved must-haves. First and foremost, you will need a shredded pair of short jeans. Then it is time for a cute white t-shirt and a pair of colored Converse sneakers. Oh, and do not forget a cute flower crown!
