2021 no doubt started waist-up dressing to a higher degree, and for this reason, it seems that the popular fall/ winter 2021-2022 jewelry trends focused greatly on what would be shown on a Zoom screen. Designers focused on cascading jewelry and dripping gemstones. Delicate pearls were popular, and sparkling silver took the lead from gold tones. Shocking, I know!
So, enjoy the super-sized benefits of over-the-top earrings and floral brooches that prove optimism is budding everywhere. There is little to doubt that these statement pieces will spark joy and create a feeling of unity. The hefty metallic items give a ‘badass’ feel to the collections, from large rings that allow us to reminisce about ‘infinity stones’ in the Marvel Universe to raw metallic shapes cuffed to the wrists and ears.
As Tom Ford said on Instagram, “Fierce, powerful, and badass are words that resonated with me this season.” And he is clearly correct – these words resonate with almost all of the collections. Badass, yes! Ostentatiously shown accessories – no, well, maybe a little!
Along with the accessory trends for jewelry, opera gloves also became popular, and detachable turtleneck scarfs were seen on many a runway for their warmth and comfort. So, enjoy one or all of the fall 2021 accessory trends because it seems that form and function have come together in a harmonious union this season. Without further ado, here is the list we have compiled for the major accessory trends:
#1. Floral Additions
Who doesn’t adore flowers, even in the fall and winter? It seems that if this year was recorded in Greek Mythology, Persephone would continue to stay with Demeter throughout the cold months to assist in the fashion trends’ ‘accessory’ category. From floral belts at Peter Do to gold flower brooches at Schiaparelli to beaded earrings at Prabal Gurung and Simone Rocha, floral elements proved that they are here for the fall as a sign of both optimism and hope for the future. So clearly, there is no reason to stew in darkness this season since there’s all these blooms.
#2. Logomania Continues
While logos can be a polarizing item in the fashion industry, logomania is reaching its height again, just like in the ‘80s. If you perpetually stalk Glowsly for fashion trend updates, you most likely know this from our mentions of it in the print trends, as well as in the bag trends.
However, if you don’t want to go for an over-the-top outfit to show off your labels and still feel the need to hop on this trend, then Chanel’s and Gucci’s lip rings have got your back, and Casablanca’s belt with their brand name written in large letters dangling off the chain is more than ready to get a hold of your heart. Still, if you want even more of a casual logo statement, then the Fendi necklace designed simply with the logo is perfect for letting all the fashion stalkers around you know just how well dressed you are.
#3. Circular Statement Pieces
From the Balenciaga sunglasses mentioned in an earlier article to the Ports 1961 necklace featuring a circle, and Dries van Noten, Temperley London, and Stella Jean creating large round rings, the circle has risen as the most popular shape to feature in jewelry designs. Therefore, if you want to reach for anything from a vintage bubble skirt to the new spherical options, then you will most certainly be highlighting one of the most popular accessory trends of fall 2021.
#4. Animal Details
Animals are out on the prowl for the upcoming fall and winter season. Sure, they may never have been caged with the animal print continuing to hunt down fashion lovers everywhere, but if you’re craving a full-blown animal accessory extravaganza, this is your year.
If you’re after some more benign creatures that fly, then look towards Coach’s owl barrette or Chopova Lowena’s butterfly earrings. However, if you’re looking for something that can snap, then Bottega Veneta’s snake-style rings and bracelets, along with Coach’s lobster earrings, are the perfect options for you.
Going with this accessory trend, it also seemed that many styling directors made sure to have the models pose with animals, from a statue of a chicken at Loewe to an adorable dog at Coach! Guess it’s time to bring out all of our animal instincts!
#5. Pearl Power
Oh yes, the sophisticated and classy jewel that comes from the inner fold of a clam is continuing to be trendy. As Jackie O stated, “pearls are always appropriate,” and that seems to be a statement that many designers agreed with this season, from Stacey Bendet at Alice and Olivia using them in headbands to Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana creating hefty pearl necklaces, and Matthew Williams using the gemstone in belts for his brand Alyx. Power to the pearls!
For those with cool tones to their skin, it’s time to rejoice. While gold jewelry that is reminiscent of the ‘80s era Dynasty has undoubtedly been an exceedingly popular jewelry trend for the past couple of years, it seems that for the fall 2021 jewelry trends, silver has been the metallic of choice. If you feel the need to join this trend, then head to Isabel Marant, Vivienne Westwood, Sportmax, Moschino, or Loewe. Yes, you have a lot of choices, so make sure to enjoy it!
You don’t have to be a hippy from the ‘60s to enjoy the healing effects of crystals, nor do you have to believe in their healing properties at all. Just enjoy the aesthetic view from the glamourous stones at Ulla Johnson, Ambush, and Paco Rabanne simply for their sparkle. However, if you’re still after the hippy vibe, then Chloe’s fun crystals strung up on a leather cord were meant for you.
#8. Chunk It up
Chunky chains proved that they are here to stay on all of the fall/ winter 2021 runways that occurred back in February. From Louis Vuitton to Valentino, linked metals that were anything but delicate took hold of the public’s fascination. After all, it’s simply like the Tom Ford quote from the start of this article – we all want to be badass!
Like fringe running off fabric this season, fringe created from chains is increasingly popular and easily the most common (and stunning) jewelry trend of fall/ winter 2021. From the belts at Marni and Hermes to the jewelry at Dolce & Gabbana, Blumarine, Chanel, Etro, Jil Sander, and Carolina Herrera to the purse chains added at both Valentino and Versace, this trend is one that any fashionista simply won’t be able to live without, and with so many styles and options, you won’t have to!
#10. Brooching the Subject
It seems that Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic brooches added onto her outfits in Sex and the City have inspired many designers for this upcoming season. But this isn’t as shocking as the fashion world’s conversions from gold to silver since throwback styles have only just continued to grow in popularity.
So, if you want to add some delicious aughts-style details, then Nina Ricci, Alessandra Rich, Simone Rocha, Miu Miu, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Fendi have all got you covered. Therefore, throwing on some embellished details to your detachable turtleneck (we’ll get to that later) would make you a fashion superstar.
#11. Raw Shapes
Raw and sculptural shapes are continuing to become exceedingly popular with jewelry designers. Perhaps this is partly due to the Halston show on Netflix that has mentions of Elsa Perretti’s beautiful, raw designs, but I choose to think that it’s designers wanting to reach the recognition that jewelry company Body Parts has been receiving of late (though that will cause designers to need to be far more sustainable). Therefore, if you want to reach for the raw sculptural details that are trending, then Schiaparelli and Longchamp are ready with many options.
#12. Oversized Earrings
The bigger, the better is certainly a true sentiment for this accessory trend! Dripping ornamental earrings that grazed shoulders were obsessively popular, and while we will all have hopefully quit Zoom by fall and winter, long earrings will still draw attention if you remain doing anything virtual. So, reach to Chanel, Ulla Johnson, or Valentino for some true statement earrings that you can cherish forever.
#13. Hoop Power
Hoop earrings are a staple for pretty much anyone in love with jewelry, and for this reason, the trend is far-reaching and never seems like it will end. Be it big hoops or little hoops (or anything in between), the signature statement earring trend is back once more for everyone to fawn over. Sure, sculptural and two-tone options were found at Proenza Schouler and 3.1 Phillip Lim, and sharp details were added to Jonathan Simkhai’s collection – but the shape remained the same, even if it was elongated as it occurred at Tanya Taylor. All hail the hoop earring for next season once more!
#14. Charmed, I’m Sure
Charms aren’t reserved for your wrist, and while they are best to delicately remind you of memories, that isn’t a requirement either. If you have a particular adoration for charms (or know someone that does), then enjoying this accessory trend is a perfect option, as the delicate memories can also be gathered around your neck from Miu Miu, Marni or Marine Serre. I’m sure you’ll be charmed and treasure the twist on this jewelry classic!
#15. All in on the Nostalgia
It’s no secret the 2000s styles have hit a resurgence, and while you might have your own opinions on the styles, Y2K looks are back in the fall/ winter 2021 jewelry trends as well. If you still have the colorful beads strung up on stretchy wires from the early aughts, it’s time to pull them out again. However, if you threw those out with your bubble skirts and low-rise jeans, reach for the Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and Versace beaded bracelet options that will bring back all the nostalgia. Just be glad you won’t be spending our time on the Rainbow Loom again for rubber band bracelets!
#16. One-Sided Earrings
While it’s quite clear this season that many designers aren’t not following the ‘less is more’ strategy with either their jewelry or clothes, it seems that Thebe Magugu, Prada, and Givenchy all (at least partially) jumped on the minimal jewelry route by making their earrings one-sided. The lovely thing about this edgy accessory trend is that it’s perfect if you’ve got a missing earring from a pair!
#17. Opera Gloves
Ditch the blue sanitizing gloves this season for stylish opera-style gloves instead. Sure, the furry option at Givenchy might be a little too much, and you can only dream of going to an actual performance in Versace’s elbow-length option, but both Collina Strada and Acne Studios rolled out (or should I say up?) gloves that you can use on the daily. Keeping yourself safe and looking good was never this easy until now!
#18. Detachable Turtlenecks
Princess Diana-esque detachable turtlenecks took the fashion world by storm this fall and winter as an incredibly popular accessory trend. While last season focused on detachable ruffs and extra-frilly collars, the fall/ winter runways of 2021 added a new spin on the trend by creating turtlenecks that could be added or taken away from brands such as PH5, Prada, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Theophilio.
#19. Statement Socks
Calling all fashionable little kids! It seems that there is truth in the saying that growing up isn’t about your age, but rather your mind (or fashion) is truly correct this season, and all creative directors are just little kids at heart. Whether you want to continue in the deep-dive of the mushroom trend with socks from Coach, or go for the distressed socks from either Dior or Acne Studios, or grab some colorful thigh-highs at Miu Miu, this accessory trend is sure to keep you warm.
#20. Mask Mania
Yes, yes, we might all be slightly tired of wearing masks, but if it’s aiding in diminishing COVID-19 from spreading and can still be somewhat fashionable, why would we want to ignore it? While some masks in fall and winter were the regular ones that many of us have been wearing, both Marine Serre and Rick Owens decided that flowing and scarf-like masks would be far more dramatic and incorporated them into their collections. Talk about a grand entrance!
